Miner Craftmaster
Heather Visits
and the Apprentices Dig a Hole!
March 14,
1999
From inside the wagon, Garen grins and waves,
stuffing a bubbly pie - probably for effect or maybe he really
does eat that much. He waves to everyone as he motions for the
team to move. "Git yup!" he yells, muffled, to the
team of runner. As the team pulls past Paric and Darlia, he grins.
"Look'n forward to your food my next visit, maam."
he yells out laughing heartily.
Gaederon climbs down off the woodpile to see
if any more pies are left, and seeing none smiles remembering
how good they were.
Paric chuckles and shakes his head.
Garen urges the team of runners to pull the
Smithcraft Hall Wagon forward.
Smithcraft Hall Wagon being pulled by a very
well-fed team of runners moves to the Forest Path.
Darlia looks up and her eyes follow the path
of the wagon before she goes to her tent.
Paric glances over at Cera, "Hey love...perhaps
a bit of a break. Darlia made some bubblies...what's left of
them."
Cera pauses in her path, "Ahh hello sweets...No
thank you I forgot something back in our room that I need to
get.."
Cera swings up onto Khaki's back.
Gaederon wanders over to Bryon and claps him
on the back "How are you this glorious day?"
Paric nods and takes one of the remaining
pies.
From Khaki's back, Cera waves to Paric, "I
will see you later...is there anything that you need before I
go?"
Paric shakes his head, "No love...I think
that we are fine! See you soon!"
From Khaki's back, Cera nods and spurs the
runner forward.
Khaki walks to the Forest Path.
Crespa suddenly disappears ::between::!
Gaederon walking over to Paric "What
next sir?"
Paric chuckles and shakes his head. "Well...,"
he begins to say as he walks over to a table with several large
drawings on them. "I think we can at least help with some
of the digging that needs to be done." He points to several
locations. "Why don't you see if you two can get some shovels
and wheelbarrows and begin diggin here," he says pointing
to the section where the new Hall will be. "We can dig out
to the other buildings as we go."
Gaederon says, "Are we diging a foundation
or for a Slab? I want to know how deep to go."
Ransor says, "Yeah, good point..."
Paric looks over toward the northern section
of the clearing where some people are already removing earth.
"Yes...over there. Just try to stay within the stakes."
He turns and chuckles at the apprentice. "Deep? Ah .. about
as deep as you are twice tall!"
Paric chuckles, "That will be where the
kitchen store rooms, classrooms, and tunnels to the craft buildings
will be."
Gaederon looks a bit surprised, but heads
over to where there are shovels piled, Grabs a shovel and moves
to the place Paric indicated.
Ransor grins and heads over to make an initial
inspection of the ground. "Hmm...soft ground, shouldn't
take long."
Heather steps lightly and gracefully in from
the Forest.
Paric chuckles and shakes his head as he turns
back to the drawings.
Bryon follows Gaederon and Ransor, picking
up a shovel as he heads toward the staked out plot of ground
Gaederon Laughs at Ransor "Perhaps it
is soft on top Ransor, let's wait till we get more than two blades
deep before we decide how long it will take." Continues
to chuckle to himself as he presses foot to shovel and begins
to dig.
Heather hmms slightly as she wipes a bead
of sweat from her brow, "Well now...so this is the right
place, " she mutters to herself, hands resting upon her
hips as she clicks her teeth and looks around.
Ransor begins digging too, smiling a little.
"Yeah, maybe you're right, Gaed..."
You notice Heather looking at you.
Paric scratches the side of his neck and looks
back toward the stream. He turns at the sound of the voice, "Ah...Heather.
I see you've found our secluded hideout!"
Gaederon says, "Just immagine we are
diging up gemstones or gold for marks or something, makes the
diging go so much faster..."
Bryon puts the end of the shovel against the
dirt, putting his foot on the back of it and pressing down. After
the shovel is in the ground he pulls it out, taking a good amount
of dirt with it..
Heather chuckles softly as she nods, "Yes,
just having a peek, thought since I was at the quarry I would
come out here and see when you might need the stone.." she
tilts her head to one side as she continues to scan the area,
a hand lightly over her brow to block the sunshine, "seems
a large enough area." she says to Paric.
Ransor continues to press into the ground,
starting to sweat with the hard work.
Gaederon having a shovel full of dirt, and
being well away from the edge of the marked out area, decides
to see if there is a barrow for the dirt.
Heather chuckles under her breath at Gaederon's
comment, "You could always come to the minecraft and work..we
will gladly teach you *how* to dig," she wiggles her brows
and chuckles goodnaturedly.
Paric chuckles and nods, "Yea..it is.
We've got them started on digging out the area which will be
housing our storerooms right now." He chuckles as he looks
back toward the Smithcraft apprentices hard at work. Turning
back to Heather, "Hmmm..now the stone. I figure that we
can probably just start moving it up here as soon as we can.
I believe that Garen was heading down to Blacksands with the
wagon...though I'm sure he can swing by and start helping moving
some of the stone up."
Gaederon walking over to Heather looks into
her eyes questioningly "Perhaps you should teach me right
now, so that I may perform my duties properly, and not waste
my effort?"
Gaederon turning a bit red "Gaederon,
Maam... Sorry to not Introduce myself" A bit out of breath
Ransor chuckles and continues to dig, stopping
every now and then to check his progress.
Heather chuckles at Gaederon as she pats her
tummy, "You know I would really love to..but L'var wouldn't
be to please, I suppose I could have Versalth come over and dig
a bit..L'var's bronze is never *really* busy.." she giggles
as she turns to Paric and nods, "hopefully the small supply
at BS will be enough for now, we have the some others at the
quarry working as we speak, but it is alot of back labor, we
are just lucky it is winter..or the heat in the quarry would
be stiffling.." she cringes lightly as she wipes another
bead of sweat from her brow.
Bryon chuckles as he keeps digging, sweat
not on his brow
Paric frowns and looks over at Gaederon, "Hmmm...yes...perhaps
we should send you up to the Quarry with Miner Craftmaster Heather
and she can put you to work there!"
Gaederon Looking down at his feet "I
only thought that Diging and piling the dirt up inside the boundry
would waste time. I am sorry sir."
Ransor raises an eyebrow, looking over at
Paric, but continues to dig, minding his own business.
Bryon chuckles at Gaederon as he continues
to dig, not in a mean way, more in a you'll learn way...
Paric chuckles and nods at Heather's comment.
"Yes...that is true. I think we'll send Gaed here up to
pick up a load nonetheless. He can go up with Garen after he
gets back in couple of days."
Heather clears her throat and smiles at Gaederon
pleasantly, a twinkle within her eyes, "I am Heather minecraft
Craftmaster.." she extends a callused hand to Gaederon as
she winks at Paric, "sharding out going for an Apprentice.."
her voice teasing.
Paric chuckles and grins, "Yes...he is
isn't he?"
Gaederon reaches out his hand to the Minecraft
Craftmaster "I... Yes sir."
Ransor trades grins with Bryon and continues
to dig, noticing how fast the job seems to be coming along.
Heather says, "nods as she wiggles her
brows and hmms, "We can always use the help, and hauling
such a load as that will take time.." she pauses and looks
at the Apprentice, "as well as muscles,.." her eyes
scanning the lad for obvious muscles, "just don't send any..weak
people..can't have anyone hurt lifting a few rocks.." she
grins crookedly as she talks to Paric."
Paric chuckles and nods, "Well...Gaed
here was showing his prowness at carrying stacks of boards. I'm
sure that he'll be able to handle a couple of stone blocks!"
Heather looks at Gaed and hmms, "Wiry..he
might hold up..though.." she pauses and shrugs, "we
might have to feed him a few good meals and toughen him up a
wee bit..make a real miner out of him.." she hides her chuckles
as she looks back at the area, "nice area, but will it flood
in the spring..or with storms?" she asks Paric.
Paric chuckles and turns back to Gaederon,
"Yea...wasn't Garen saying something about eating more?"
He says with a grin. "Why don't you head back up to the
digging. And I expect that you will pay attention to who it is
you are talking to the next time!"
Bryon smiles at Heather's assesment of Gaederon
while he continues digging, leaving the masters to themselves...
Heather watches both Paric and Gaed as she
sighs deeply taking in the cool air, "I really should get
out more..the air here is so fresh.." she grins as she crosses
her arms and then asks, "is that where the mill will be,
by the stream?" she points to the area she thinks it will
be.
Paric nods, "Yep...once we start getting
walls built we'll install the millworks. We still have to craft
the water wheel and gears."
Bryon continues shoveling dirt without stopping,
sweat beginning to slowly gather on his brow
Heather's mouth forms an -0- like shape as
she listens and nods, her hair lightly sways over her shoulder
as she tosses it back into place, "I see..well this will
cost you plenty, but.." she shrugs lightly, "I suppose
we can talk cost at another time, unless you are ready to start
some discussion on it now?" her emerald eyes sparkle, as
she waits upon Paric's response.
Paric chuckles, "Well.. I don't see why
can't talk a little about the costs." He turns to the drawings.
"Well...you've seen the drawings and the actual work site.
What are your impressions as to what you need from us?"
Take A Look At The Drawings
Gaederon returns to his shovel and decides
to just have at it...
Bryon chuckles as Gaederon begins shoveling
quickly. Bryon continues on at the same steady pace that he's
had for the last twenty minutes
Heather hmms as she scratches her chin, "I
have a parchment of some of the stone you will be needing,Evan
said he wanted grey granite for the bldings, and a light grey
marble for the large staircase in the main hall.." she sighs,
"I tried to get him to decide on something a little more
dramatic..but.."and she shrugs, "does this sound correct
to you?" she asks as she looks over her parchment and the
edges try to recurl in her fingers.
Heather watches Bryon quietly as she looks
back at her parchment, her mind going over figures as she asks
Byron, "You keep that up and you will make the other Apprentices
jealous.." she smiles softly at Bryon as she turns her attention
back to Paric.
Bryon laughs and keeps digging, "I just
want to get it done, ma'am.." he mutters as he shovels...
Gaederon mutters under his breath "if
he keeps that up he will be exhausted in no time, and the rest
of us will have to finish."
Gaederon presses shovel to dirt and carries
the load out of the marked area.
Paric chuckles and nods, "Yes...that
sounds like Evan. Though I'm not sure if we need the complete
grandeur of the marble. How is it on handling to wear and tear?"
Bryon smiles and keeps digging, "Gaederon,
I've had to do this before, a lot..." he mutters as he keeps
digging and tossing the dirt into a pile outside of the stakes
area
Gaederon continues to remove the thatch and
turf from the surface of the dig.
Heather nods at Bryon as she sighs, "Could
use a man like that to haul more stone..when the time comes..need
strong arms and backs.." she mutters under her breath as
she again looks at Paric, "well, it can handle everyday
wear and tear...but if you plan on dropping hard tools or the
like upon it, it will get dinked.." she wrinkles her nose,
"but you can't beat the look of a good marble, all that
granite should have at least one eye opening material in it,
and he wanted a slate roof..you would think for a project like
this, you would want something that will be a landmark for the
future..something to look back on in pride.." she sighs,
a furrow fills her forehead from her frown, "not just how
much it will cost, but will you take pride in your hall turns
down the line?" she tsks under her breath, "all that
grey.."
Paric chuckles, "Well...Evan is a little
tight with the marks as it were..." He rubs his chin for
a second then looks back up at Heather, "Well...perhaps
we can have marble for the Gather Hall floor..." he says
pointing to the drawing. "And...perhaps something that would
look nice for the large fireplace."
Ransor continues to dig, not starting to tire
/too/ much...
Darlia smiles as she leaves her tent, noticing
all the work that is going on she nods to Paric, glancing at
the newcomer.
Heather hmms deeply as she nods, "Could
even have a mantle..something to place..ahh..smith stuff upon.."
she grins as she considers, "you know a nice polished river
stone fire place would be nice, but perhaps a bit rustic for
a marble flooring..hmm..do you still want all that grey?"
she inquires, her eyes scaning Paric's features, "just a
touch of color might be nice, but it is your hall.."
Heather nods to Darlia as she smiles and points
to her parchment, "What about something for the front entry?..perhaps
on the front of the blding, or the steps?..something different?"
Gaederon having cleared a large area of turf
begins to press in deeper.
Paric chuckles, "Well...we could deal
with a polished granite. Not all granite is grey is it?"
Bryon continues digging as he looks around
at the dirt and everything. The bandage on his arm is beginning
to turn red on the upper part of his arm...
Ransor stops a bit to wipe sweat from his
brow, breathing heavily. He looks around, checking the sky, and
continues to dig, a bit faster than before.
The sound of metal scraping on sand and rock
begins to fill the area of the clearing.
Heather chuckles and shakes her head, "No..some is quite
lovely, even with a tinge of pink in it..but Evan wanted grey.."
her opinion on all that grey is clearly written upon her features,
"he said that is what tapestries are for.." she rolls
her eyes.
Gaederon presses shovel to ground, the crunch
of earth loud in his ears, and the scrape of the rocks in the
soil piercing him like knives.
Heather hmms softly as she quickly adds, "And
what about the foundation?..you going to have several levels,
we have to have a strong foundation.." she looks up from
the plans to her parchment taking more notes.
Paric nods, "Yes...three levels actually."
he says flipping through the drawings. "This is the lower
level. You can see here where the bearing walls will be. And
these extend up to the upper levels."
Heather scans the plans and hmms deeply, her
mind wondering, "I see, well..hmm." she mutters softly,
"you having arches or regular entry ways?"
Ransor walks to the Forest Path.
Ransor walks in from the Forest.
Gaederon finds himself in a hole up to his
hips, and decides to widen it a bit.
Ransor continues to shove roughly into the
ground, hauling soft, brown earth up and onto a pile. He has
cleared out quite a large area now.
Paric nods, "Archways in the main gathering
areas. Regular openings in the other areas." he says flipping
a couple of pages down to another drawing which shows a different
perspective.
Heather watches Paric and wonders if she missed
his reply she smiles silly like and asks, "Perhaps you didn't
hear me.." she then ahhs under her breath as she listens
to Paric, "I see, well arches are fine, they can hold alot,
but you need to have different cut stone for those areas.."
she hmms as she puts the writting tool slightly against her cheek,
"well, I suppose this will do for now..but marks will be
tallying up as we go, is that alright with you?"
Paric chuckles and nods. "Though I'm
sure Evan wouldn't like it. But if that is what you need to do."
He looks back over the drawing then back over at the site. "I
think ... umm...Perhaps we can do some of this in trade."
Heather wiggles her brows, "Trade?"
she hmms, "we could use some new tools and the like, and
a Journeyman is working on a pump.." she hmms, "perhaps
we could at that.." her smile grows to cheshire cat proportions.
Paric smiles broadens into a grin, his hand
rubbing at his chin. He nods, "Good...get me a list of what
you need and I'll see to it."
Gaederon finds himself opening up his hole
into the hole Ransor has been diging, getting a pile of dirt
on top of him.
Heather nods as she hmms, "I will have
to send my Journeyman to you, he has the plans..I haven't really
gotten a good look at them as yet..but we could sure use a pump.."
she nods as she stretches and looks at the sun, "well I
better be heading back, Versalth will be waiting..and L'var doesn't
like to wait to long.." she grins as she extends her hand
to Paric and tucks her parchment under her arm, "good to
see you again,"
Gaederon says, "Sorry Ransor. Hey lets
open this up a bit and make it easier to dig."
Paric chuckles and nods as he shakes Heather's
hand. "Very good .. and it was great to see you once again!
And you should be seeing Garen or someone else from the Smithcraft
down at Blacksands in the next couple of day."
Ransor nods to Gaed, brushing dirt off and
grinning. "No prob." He continues to help him open
the hole wider.
Heather nods as she smiles, "That would
be fine,..take care now..and keep those Appies working...we will
need to start laying the foundation soon.." she looks at
the sky, "before the spring rains begin.." and off
she heads to the dragon..
Heather goes home.
Paric turns back and walks over to the growing
dirt pile and stands at the edge of one of the holes, "Good
job so far,
Ransor, Gaederon!" he says eyeing the
work they've accomplished so far.
Gaederon says, "Do you think we should
dig wide first or deep, I prefer wide because then it is easier
to dig down."
Ransor nods in agreement. "Yeah, that'd
be faster..." He looks up at Paric from the hole, waiting
for an answer.
Paric chuckles and nods, "Yes...dig out
from where you are. It should make it easier for you when you
get deeper to get out of the hole!"
Ransor smiles and nods, digging even faster
outwards from where he's standing.
Gaederon begins to shovel sideways pulling
dirt onto his feet, and then picking it up and tossing it out
to the pile.
Gaederon turns to Ransor "I immagine
this would be much easier if there were a dragon or two about
to help dig..."
Gaederon stops mid sentence thinking about
something.
Ransor grins at Gaed and chuckles. "Wishful
thinking, friend. Dragons have better things to do than dig."
Gaederon says, "I met a dragon recently..."
Gaederon says, "It was K'len's Brown
Keshalth."
Gaederon presses in finding the dirt to be
very loose, and makes great progress pulling it from the wall
of the hole.
Ransor nods. "I was born in High Reaches
Weyr...my parents made me join a Craft, though. This one, obviously.
But my younger brother aims to be a rider, I hear." He says
all this as he works.
Paric chuckles and shakes his head as he heads
back over to the work table.
Paric rubs his chins and ponders Ransor and
Gaederon's conversation about dragons doing digging. "Hmmm..."
Ransor sighs, continuing the task, and noting
how near to completion they are. He casts a glance over at Paric,
but coninues the tiring work.
Gaederon begins lifting large shovelfulls
of dirt from the bottom of the pit he and Ransor have made, also
sensing the completion of this level of the diging.
Ransor assists Gaed in scooping out all the
excess dirt that is on the bottom. When they're done with this,
he sighs tiredly. "I believe a break is in order,"
he says with a grin.
Gaederon wiping sweat from his brow "I
sure hope so, my back and arms are beginning to complain loudly.
Gaederon says, "Mucking stalls is much
lighter work than diging earth."
Ransor grins and nods.
Gaederon Chuckles, a bit out of breath "This
earth sure smells better though.:
Ransor nods and can imagine. "Indeed..."
he climbs out of the hole and takes a few steps back, sureveying
their work. "Not bad..."
Gaederon scrapes his shovel about the bottom
a bit, picking up loose clumps of earth and tossing them onto
the pile, always mindful to finish a job.
Ransor sighs, wiping sweat from his brow and
eyeing the stream.
Gaederon climbing up out of the hole and scraping
the shovel off with the heal of his shoe, places it back on the
pile with the others.
Ransor also tosses his shovel onto the pile.
He yawns, stretching. "I need a nap. Be back later."
Still yawning, he heads to his tent.
Ransor enters Dusty Tent.
Gaederon brushes the dirt from his body and
goes for a walk
Gaederon walks to the Forest Path.
