Second Scouting Trip to Find New Site for a Smithcraft Hall

March 4, 1999

Reception Hallway

This large and open hallway is the Reception Hall for Ista's Smithhall. Baskets of herbs hang from the ceiling, lending a fresh scent to the room. Windows looking toward the sea add light to the room during daylight. No visible traces of storm damage remain, every surface bears a new finish to it. Occasionally you hear a muffled noise from the Craftworks.

Baskets set into the wall are filled with sweet-smelling herbals.

Obvious exits:

Great Hall Craftworks Living Area

Cera gracefully moves in from the great hall.

Cera chuckles softly, "Well love..I think we should go and talk to Evan about the plans for the new hall."

Craftworks

Black soot mars the very edges of the mortar along the walls that remain standing, otherwise the room is vacant of signs of the recent fire. Fresh air blows through the room from the open ceiling above, and a small creature decided to make its home on a small stone shelf set into the far wall. A dusty trail of dirt leads across the floor to the Smith Office, which remained unharmed during the fire.

To the west, you see one person.

You see Flamethrower Class, Metalwork Table, and Forge here.

Obvious exits:

Smith Office Reception Hallway

Paric smiles at his lovely spouse. "Good evening love..." he says a small roll of paper tucked under his arm. "Yes...very true."

Cera gracefully moves up from the Reception Hall.

Paric is led in by Cera.

Paric smiles at his lovely spouse. "Good evening love..." he says a small roll of paper tucked under his arm. "Yes...very true."

Smith Office

A smoke damaged room. The shelves are slightly charred and soot-covered, the papers on the desk brown around the edges. However, on the whole, the room is mostly undamaged.

Baskets set into the wall are filled with sweet-smelling herbals.

Evan is here.

Obvious exits:

Children's Room Bedroom Craftworks

Cera gracefully moves into the office.

Paric is led in by Cera.

Cera smiles softly as she enters quietly, "Evan?"

Evan nods to the pair as they enter, turning from his work on the shelves inset into the wall, "Evening Paric, Cera. How go things?"

Cera smiles as she looks around, "Oh my...things were a little damaged in here...I haven't been in since the fire.." moving more into the room, she says, "I wanted to discuss with you about plans for a new hall.."

Evan stops, dead. "A new hall..." he drawls... "Surely you mean the refit of our current hall."

OOC: Evan watches Evan pull the purse-strings tight.... :>

Cera chortles lightly, "Uh well Evan...I believe that it would be in the best interest of SmithCraft if we were to have a new hall.."

Evan nods... "Good. And you can afford it?"

Paric frowns and looks around the office, his free hand reaching back to rub his neck. "Yes... I would have to agree with Cera. The damage to the craftworks was very great and I'm afraid that we'd have to demolish most of the building as it is... I don't think we have a choice but to afford it."

Cera laughs, "Well if I could afford it alone..I would be the first to do it. I think if we all work together and do some commisions that SmithCraft would be able to handle it stress of the purchase."

Paric smiles and nods, "Most of the work could be done by the Smithcraft as it is..."

Evan frowns, "It will almost clean out our coffers... assuming we draw up useable plans. YOu do realize that it will take atleast an extra month to find a site and work out plans before we can start building? It will take quite a while to start work here on Ista again."

Paric smiles and nods, "Perhaps...though I believe that we could set up temporary facilities.... It might not be of the quality we'd like. However, when has a Smith had it truely easy..."

Cera relaxes back into an easy stance that is more comfortable as she surveys the room's damage, listening to Evan, her head turning around fast to face him as she heres the cleaning out the coffers, "I understand that part...but with larger and cleaner work areas we will easily be able to replenish them. Paric has been working on a new set of plans for the hall and I believe Jag has been out scouting some areas when he was deliver some commisions he had before the fire."

Evan frowns, "So you three are trying to subvert me? Force me into a plan now that you've done all that work?" He scowls, and remains silent for a few moments. "Well, let me see these supposed 'plans'... We'll see if you've actually done an adequate job on them."

Cera smiles, clasping her hands behind her back, rocking slightly on her feet as she thinks, "Hmmm...well I am not trying to subvert you...I don't think that it would be a wise idea to come to you without having worked out the details before hand. We don't have an incredible amount of time to deal with here. Especially with the new residents that have been arriving at the hall...we need more room to just house them."

Cera turns to Paric, "Love...the plans?"

Paric chuckles and shakes his head. He moves over to the desk and unrolls the large drawings out in front of the Craftmaster. "Here you go Evan....simply three buildings...the main crafthall comprised of three levels...as you can see..."

Evan frowns, and begins looking over the plans... "Hrrm...." "Interesting..." he mutters as he looks over them. "Tell me, why are most of the main crafting areas well away from the stream? We could use it for power there as well."

The New Smithcraft Hall Initial Plans

Cera looks to Paric, "Well love?"

Paric nods, "Actually...I was thinking that we could use the power generated by the millworks to pump water to those locations...as well as the rest of the hall. On the upper level near the roof, we would also put a reservoir tank to store the water for the main hall."

Evan nods, "Sure, but several of our halls use overhead gears and belts driven by a stream to power tools. Why would we not take advantage of that?

Paric smiles and nods, "Well...that can still be accomplished. At first with apprentices...then as piping is moved into the buildings, the additional water can power the additional gears... I think most of this can be phased in as we build."

Evan raises a brow, "Paric... it will be much much easier to just build the building by the stream. Less things that can break. Efficiancy is key. If we're building from scratch, we need to do it right."

Cera turns to Paric, as she thinks for a moment, "You know I always wondered..with the smoke from the Metal forge..does this ever affect the wood? and the heat? I wonder about that and how the wood would swell."

Evan continues looking over the plans... "In any case, situating the apprentices with the residents is a bad idea. we'll drive them all up. Put the Residents with the Masters, and the Journeymen's rooms by the Apprentice's dorms.

Paric smiles, "Actually...with the wood, we need to worry about fire. It is extremely combustible...more than what happened to the craftworks. Particularly when you add the various finishes and stains. One of the reasons that the building is placed away from the Hall and other craft areas." He rubs his chin, "It is also important to have a fairly clean area when we are doing the finishes..."

Paric smiles and nods at Evan's suggestion. "Yes...that isn't a problem. It would also provide a closer oversight to them..."

Evan frowns at Paric, suddenly dubious, "You didn't purposefully put in small errors for me to fix and feel important, did you?"

Paric shakes his head and laughs, "No...just an oversight."

Evan Frowns at paric, "Then why in faranth's name did you put the Chemical lab near the woodcrafters?"

Paric nods, "Actually... I'm planning on moving that further back from the woodcraft area. That is why it is also located the furtherst from the Hall."

Paric smiles, "I've only had the preliminary report from Agrajag to base these drawings on...so this isn't completely to scale..."

Evan motions towards the underground tunnels, "If we're excavating for tunnels, we should consider digging out enough for a full sub-level or two. We certianly won't be able to do it later, and it'll give us room to expand.

Paric nods, "True...I think we'll need to talk to the Minecraft and see how long it'll take... but your point is well taken."

Evan nods, "A sub-basement under the wood area would be a good clean room as well..." He frowns, and continues going over the plans.

Cera listens carefully as Paric and Evan discuss the plans.

Paric smiles and nods, "However, the ventilation is also important...the woodcraft area is large enough that it really has no need of the downstairs area. I placed that in to make it easier for the Smithcraft to operate during threadfall. People could work while waiting for the fall to end, then move out to help in clean up..."

Evan points to the stream, "You're right next to a stream. set up powered ventilation. In any case, these plans are a good start... although they have a ways to go. What about a site?"

Cera chuckles softly, "Well..Agrajag had found a site near a forest...it can be cleared and has a running stream that we could use for the mill."

Paric nods.

Evan Frowns, "How level?"

Paric smiles, "From my understanding the area has a slight slope to it...though it should be workable."

Evan nods, "have you talked to the miners about prices for stone?

Cera shakes her head at that comment, "No..I thought that would be better left up to you or Paric to get the best price...I think we need you permission for this project though before that step."

Crespa blinks in from ::between::!

Cera calls to Crespa, who flies over and lands on her

Cera chuckles softly, reaching up she scratches Crespa a little, as she lands on her shoulder.

Paric smiles and nods, "Though...considering our relations with the Minecraft, I'm sure that they will provide the manpower to help with the job...an exchange of work as it were..."

Cera nods, "Haven't we done quite a bit for MineCraft? it could be a return of favors already paid."

Evan nods, True, we need to speak to Charis about the landd."

Zemin glides into the office.

Evan Frowns, "Can one of you do that? Once we get the land we can talk to Heather."

Cera nods, "Yes..I suppose that can be arranged."

Zemin sniffs the smoky air, and flies on.

Zemin glides to the Craftworks.

Cera glances at Paric, hoping like hell that he is going to talk to MineCraft.

Paric smiles and nods, "Yes.. I don't see that as a problem."

Cera nods, "Well shouldn't we take a trip to see the site?"

Paric glances over at Cera and nods, "Yes...then we can do a little surveying on the site and redo the drawings to fit."

Evan nods, "That might make sense..."

Cera smiles and moves to the door, "Well okay then...Paric do you have an idea of where it is?"

Paric smiles, "Only a vague idea... I was hopinh to corral Agrajag and have him take me to the site...it isn't too far from the Herdercraft Hall..."

Cera nods and smiles, "Okay..well lets head off and see if we can find it."

Paric nods

You step out of the office.
