Seacliffs Flamer Lesson
April 20, 2002

Dale comes out of the smithy holding a flamer carefully with the wand pointing down. When he sees the group he moves to the carefully, "Well I offer to teach a class and it seems that word does get along very well. I am Sr. Journeyman Dale of the smith craft and I would like to welcome you all here. Might I ask all your names so we can all know each other before we start?"

Jassay is standing about idling, looking about, yah know. "Good day Sr. Journeyman Dale, I am Sr. Apprentice Jassay," all formalities, she's a healer, their formal people

Keliana smiles brightly and pipes up, determined to be first. She's a bit put out when she's beat to it, but still replies brightly. "The name's Keliana, Weaver Apprentice." She beams a smile and curtseys slightly.

Jassay curtsy's too (*that just got cut off*)

Charlell takes a small step forward. "Charlell," then quickly adds, smiling, "Apprentice Smith."

Nadine was looking about upon the entrance of the Sr. Journeyman. Glancing over at him, she flashes a quick smile. "Nadine of Ista Hold," is all that's offered. No curtsey, though...Nadine's not formal, nope. She's just here to learn how to set things on fire. Er, that is, burn up Thread burrows. Cough. "Well met, all."

Antryg, having just entered from the direction of Red Sands shyly pushes his specs in place as he smiles. I am Antryg, traveling from Red SandsHold.

Athalegar murmurs 'excuse me, excuse me' as he moves between people to a place near the back. "'Thay. Athalegar, Journeyman Dale." is his introduction.

Dale nods and moves over to the front of his smithy pulling out a flamer for everyone carefully, "Well met all and I hope we can all learn some things today. As I am sure you all know these are flame throwers and have multiple purposes that we will cover a little later. Can anyone tell me the chemical used to fight thread?" He looks between them all placing a name with a face before waiting slowly for a answer?

Jassay shrugs slightly. She should probably know and all that stuff, she is a healer, right, but saying flamethrower burn works too.

Nadine shifts slightly, eyes lightening with interest. "Agenothree?" is offered; she's heard that before. Hands move to pull hair back in a runner tail as she watches.

"Agenothree?" Athalegar shrugs and guesses.

Antryg noids toward Nadine as he advances to join the group.

Keliana nods swiftly towards the others, agreeing on the Agenothree guess. She's asked around a bit about flamethrowers, and was quite excited to come to this lesson.

Charlell lips tighten in slight embarassment. An apprentice smith should know this. She shrugs lamely and agrees with the others' guesses.

Dale smiles as the answer came up sooner then expected, "Yes it is agenothree. This has multiple purposes in that it will not only burn the thread but it will drown it as well. The only thing known to stop thread was water and fire so agenothree will do it all. Finally it makes a great fertalizer so it any is spilled it won't harm the ground. But if any gets on your body or eyes flush the area quickly and go to see a healer as soon as possible."

Nadine nods thoughtfully. It hadn't occurred to her that agenothree could be dangerous, but every weapon has its drawbacks, she supposes. She crosses her arms, a small grin starting to spread. Strange how happy Nadine gets when she's learning something.

Jassay grins, healer seeing. "You just gotta love going to visit those healers," she notes iwth a chuckle and a grin.

Scratching his head as he thinks of the danger, Antryg shivers a little. "Will it hurt you bad?" he stammers out.

Charlell winces in thought of agenothree and trips to healers and so on...

Afraid he is getting too far ahead he turns around and goes over the parts of a the flamer, "The main parts of a flamer are the tank, guage, tube, and wand. Before you use any flamer make sure to check them all carefully or you might get hurt. If there are any dents or scratches on the flamer, remove it from service and take to a smith Journeyman or master. Failing to do this might get yourself or others hurt by causing an explosion."

Jassay loves healers, it'd be pretty ironic if she didn't. "Ouch," is all she offers at the statement of what could happen if the flamer isn't in good working condition.

Nadine leans forward slightly, peering at the flamer Dale is showing them. "Dents and scratches, too?" she questions. "I didn't know those were dangerous..."

Athalegar rocks back on his heels, arms crossed over his chest as he studies Dale's model.

Antryg mumbles to himself "tank, guage, tube, wand" as he tilts his head seeming to examine the way that the thing might be put together

Dale answers Antryg carefully, "Well it will burn you a little but it taken care of anything too bad can be avoided. With any injury, no matter how small or big, you need to see a healer and get checked out." he turns and answers Nadine carefully, "Well if there is a dent then it is possibly for something inside to be messed up. Better to always be safe then sorry agree?"

Liesana arrives fashionably late and a little winded. Casually, she takes up a pose at the rear of the group, as is her usual, and peers attentively at the flamethrowers being displayed. A sly poke is offered to Jassay, her cousin, before the Harper settles herself to be studious.

Jassay listens before she yelps. "Lees," she mutters and shakes her head cuz-wards, bad cousin. Yes, see a healer, they're smart, they heal people.

Nadine nods again. "Oh, yeah, I s'pose you're right there...I've never even /seen/ a flamer before." She chuckles earthily and slides over to one side to get a better look.

Antryg concentrates as he listens to the answers that the journeyman gives them. He realizes that the more careful you are the better, and a smile slides briefly as he turns back to look.

Dale motions for them all to get a flamer, "Please take one and be careful. Their is also a safety on it that can only be turned off by a smith master and the owner. Anyone can safe a flamer and if you ever come across one that happens to be live then safe it as soon as possible to prevent an accident." The smith takes up one of them and looks around until he spots a master he asked to be here." After you take the flamer up and look it over we will go on." Dale walks a few steps back and discusses something with the master but the whole time keeping an eye out on everyone.

Liesana offers her much younger cousin an unrepentant smirk, and then cuts through the crowds to secure herself a flame thrower. She's used one a few times before, under Evan's watchful eye, but an actual /class/ on the subject is welcome. The Harper checks the dial, checks over seals and the like, and then gives a slight nod.

Jassay picks up one of the many flamers and offers her own look towards Lee's. Heya, she's 16, so if she's much younger, Lee's is /much/ older. Settling the flamer Jass examines the flamer.

Keliana picks up one of the flamers and straps it to her back, then hastily finds and secures the safety mechanism.

Dale nods and looks the flamer over he has carefully but his has also been checked before they started. Still with safty first he looks it over checking each part before sitting it down next to the charging unit, "Please come over here and sit the flamer down as well. This is the flamer charging unit and it contains the agenothree and pumps it in the flamer. Please sit your flamer down if you care and then we can fill it up." (OOC: drop the flamer but RP comming over here)

Nadine lifts the nearest flamer, checks it over, and heaves it onto her back, settling the straps comfortably and grinning at the secure feeling of weight. Glancing back over Dale, she sighs and walks over to the unit where she drops the flamer off her back, but keeps one hand laid on it almost protectively.

Jassay nods slightly and makes her way over towards the sr. journeyman, carefully toting her flamer wth her.

Athalegar smoothly moves into the forming line.

Antryg gives the device his attention whispering more to himself, "Umm, I believe this is empty, if I read this correctly." Then he hears the teacher and moves toward him adding aloud, "Ah, I was right."

Charlell shrugs the flamethrower off her back and shuffles over with the others.

Liesana nods to Dale, and then strolls over towards the flame charger, murmuring to Jassay as she passes that "It was around this time at the Tillek Gather that folks got barbecued..." with a fiendish sort of smile. Nothing like frightening family members. She lowers her flamer to the ground carefully, none the less.

Keliana trots jovially over to Dale, (well as much as you /can/ trot with a flamer on your back) and sets it down next to her.

Jassay glares at Liesana as she sets her own unit down. "I already know you were a fire person Lee's," she notes when she finds her way to her cousin. "'Sides, what better place to get charred than around a healer?"

Dale nods as they all move toward him and hooks his up to the unit, "Well once it is hooked it then agenothree will start to go in it. Once it is full the automatic shut off should turn it off but keep an eye on the guage to make sure. This is important because too much can overfill it and when your out fighting tread it helps to have it as full as possible." His flamer finishes charging and it removes it holding it slightly checking the guage to make sure all is safe, "Please hook your flamer up and fill it with agenothree. After it is done we will continue with the class."

(All hook up and fill with agenothree)

Antryg looks at the device and notes that it appears to be locked.

Charlell peers at her thrower and sighs. "It's locked, sir," she says shrugging.

The master moves around to all of the locked flamers and unlocks them with his key. Afer he is completed he returns to the side and nods to Dale. "Thank you master." Dale then looks and waits for them to finish, "After you are done please raise your hand so I can make sure all are done."

Charlell looks one last time at her flamethrower, nods slowly to herself and then raises her hand. She is ready.

Liesana keeps a close on on the charging flamer, but manages to give Jassay a tolerant smile. "Oh don't be so hard on your Da, Jass. Lian's a fine and solid fellow, for all he's more hidebound than half my archives." The flamer reaching capacity, she disengages at the correct moment, and the lifts a hand in Dale's direction. "All done over here, Senior Journeyman."

Nadine checks the gauge on hers, then nods and smiles, raising her hand. "Ready, J-man Dale." The soul of formality, can't you tell?

Keliana waits patiently while her flamer charges, then she raises a hand and peeps out. "Ready over here!"

Antryg moves his flamer slightly away from the charger noting that it looks ready.

Jassay's flamer is finished charging, so she moves it away from the charger. "He's more hidebound than all of what I've read for the hall," she points out with a chuckle...

Athalegar hefts the now much heavier flamethrower and moves for the back again, muttering something under his breath about sharding-mechanical-devices...

Dale continues and smiles, "Ok if yours is full please place it back on your back and move to my left." He motions with his left have which is away from the charger, "Also I believe that is everyone so we can continue. When it is full remember to be very careful." The smith then point to the target on the other side, "Now for firing the flamer. Point the wond at the target and then make sure that no one is in your way. When you are sure you would depress the trigger carefully. Never fire at anything other then burrows and targets. Any question before we continue?"

Keliana shakes her head slowly and prepares herself to fire, checking the flamethrower at least ten times before moving closer to the target. She looks a bit nervous, but eager to attempt.

Charlell looks at the target, then at her flamer's wand. "Ah, not especially."

Antryg moves to the far left side of the target.

Liesana winks at Jassay, and keeps her opinion that her uncle's mannerisms might be a defense against his wife to herself, instead moving into position with her now full flamer, and waiting her turn at the target.

Jassay nods slightly and moves over to the left of Dale. No, no questions from this appy, she just listens, yah know. She offers her own grin towards her elder cousing.

[OOC:] Dale says "first we will RP you firing it and then you can do it for real. RP is funner :)"

Athalegar moves off in the right direction, still fighting with the strap and trying to understand the dials and instructions.

Nadine shrugs the flamer over her shoulders and examines the triggers. Accidentally depressing it, she yells as a jet of agenothree shoots out into the thankfully clear air before her. Turning a bright shade of red, she coughs. "Um, sorry...I'll be more careful..." She quickly moves her hands away from the trigger.

Antryg carefully points the flamer in the direction of the target double checking to be sure that no people or others are in his way as he prepares to fire.

Dale nods and lifts his flamer up carefully and aims toward the target. He makes sure no one is in the way and then he presses the trigger. From the end of the flame thrower shoots a large flame that hits the target. He nods and looks to the others, "Ok next but be sure to be carefull. If you have any question please feel free to ask."

Liesana, the studiously casual and chronically informal, seems to be a closet perfectionist. At least about things like fire. She checks the dial again, and when her turn comes, sends a confident burst of flame towards the target. Which... misses. "Bah," she mutters, and tries again, suceeding this time, and marching to the back of the line with a victorious air.

Nadine moves in front of the target, being careful not to move in the range of anyone else, and cautiously pushes the trigger again. The flame leaps out, but Nadine's previous experience unnerves her and she doesn't hold it long enough for it to reach. Growling under her breath, she tries again.

Jassay chuckles as she watches her cuz, it must be in the genes, for Jass had ended up doing a very similar thing, except she misses twice. "Drat," is muttered before she tries yet again and actually hits the target. "Chalk it all up to bad aim," she notes with a sigh.

Finally getting his chance to actually press the trigger, Antryg holds the wand carefully and fires.

Athalegar , having finally (hopefully) figured out how to run the flamer, steps up to the line and pulls the trigger. The flamer does nothing more than click, and he scowls at it fiercely before disengaging the safety and firing again. This time it works, and a jet of fire is sent in the general direction of the target. Satisfied, he steps back.

Keliana raises up the flamer after she checks (about three times) that no one is in the way, then aims her flamer and fires tenatively. It misses the target for the first few times she tries, either falling short, or to the side. She finally gets it though, and a wide smile creases her face.

Charlell walks slowly to the target and pauses to take a deep breath. Her lips are tight as she aims the wand and then presses the trigger. Flame bursts forth but just misses the traget. Charlell frowns and then prepares to try again.

"Oh, I don't know about you, Jass," drawls Liesana with a twinkle in her eye. "But I was just warming up, that time I missed. I'll nail it now." Which, to her credit, she does. "Huh." is her pleased noise, and she retreats to the back again, now satisfied.

Dale nods as they all fire, "After you all have fired please return back here to the charging unit and sit the flamer down." He does the same and sits his next to the unit waiting for the other to join before continuing, "But first do fire so you know what it is like."

Antryg reaches back with a smile and pats his flamer unit as if it were an obident pet, whispering, "Good girl."

Jassay nods and, having successfully hit the target she returns to where she was and carefully sets the flamer down, isn't she a good little girl?

Keliana follows Dale's directions and removes the Flamer, now a bit lighter as Keliana has 'practiced' a bit of the agenothree out of it.

Liesana returns her flamer to it's place beside the charger, blowing a puff of escaping smoke from the end of the wand as if blowing out a candle, a slightly showboating move she's borrowing from a goldriding friend. Stepping back, she clasps her hands behind herself and cocks her head at Dale.

Nadine sighs and regretfully shrugs the flamer off her shoulders, setting it back down on the ground.

Charlell squirms out of her flamer and gently places it next to her.

Dale smiles and looks as they all sit it down, "Ok now it is unsafe to store agenothree in the flamers so we drain it back into the charging unit." The smith hooks the flamer back up to the unit and the guage slowly goes empty. He removes it from the port and looks at the others, "Please do the same and when you are done back away so another may have their turn."

(They all drain the flamers)

Athalegar sighs, finally free of the burden, and moves again for the back of the group. Now he knows /how/, but he's in no hurry to practice his skill.

Jassay watches as her flamer finishes draining and then unhooks it. Looking about she spots where everyone else has placed their's and moves over to set hers down.

Liesana crouches beside her draining flamer, nose crinkled at the faint scent of the agenothree that tangs the air. Emptied, she re takes the implement, and returns it to it's proper home, giving a nod to Dale as she passes, and leaning comfortably against a wall.

Charlell unhooks her drained flamer and places it with the others, tired and with a sigh of relief.

Dale smiles and looks at them all, "Ok not you check it out and turn the safe on." (OOC: safe flamer you had) After that it would be stored but I will handle that. I think you all for comming and any final questions?"

Nadine pats her flamer fondly, thanks the Sr. Journeyman ("Hey! Thanks a lot, Dale! S'awesome lesson!") and wanders off towards home, grinning. Makes you wonder if she's been drinking. Maybe she needs a friend here? After all, friends don't let friends flame drunk...

Jassay crouches down beside her flamer and checks it out, yup, and sets the safety on it.

Antryg sets his practice flamer with the smith's other things, again giving it an affectionate pat before walking away from it.

Charlell squints at her flamer and switches the safety back on.

Liesana safes her flamer, and then swings off to attend whatever business brought her to 'Cliffs in the first place. "Good lesson, Dale," she calls over, before heading out. "And Jass... track me down while I'm here, eh?"

Keliana curtseys again towards Dale. "Thanks for the lesson, Journeyman." She smiles again, then flounces back to where she came from.

Waving, Antryg walks off to inquire if anyone at the local pub has seen his friend Show calling "Thank you Journeyman!"

Charlell smiles and nods to the Journeyman. "Thank you again, Journeyman Dale. I will perhaps see you at Smith Hall."
