Jax's Interview

September 29, 2000

Jax enters the Smith Booth.

Natali nods to Jax "G'day, can I help you with anything?" she asks.

Jax smiles. "Yes, hopefully. I'd like to become a smith..."

Natali raises her eyebrows "A Smith? Well, then, you've come to the right place, I suppose." she says with a chuckle. "PLease, er...just have a seat here..." she pushes aside some boxes forming a perfectly good seat.

Jax grins, and takes a seat. "Thank you."

Natali pushes aside some projects that she was working on and looks at Jax, straight on the face "So, tell me, out of curiousity, why the Smiths?"

Jax sighs. "Well, my father was a smith and that really got me into it. And I have been interested in it for a while. All that work, it seems nice for me. I just find a certain joy in it!"

Natali nods slowly "I see. Any part of the smithing that interests you the most?" she asks, jotting a few 'secret' things down on a piece of wherhide.

Jax smiles. "Neckalce making? I always thought that was rather nice, making them into nice shapes like firelizards or dolphins, so neckalce making is on the top of my list at the moment."

Natali frowns "Necklace making? Well, that could mean almost anything! Are you talking about making a necklace out of wood? Or metal? Or silver? There's more to the smithcraft than just necklace making you know. When you take up a specialty, you do /alot/ more than just that...Not to mention, if you do get to make necklaces, it would be very hard to do properly until you are at least a journeyman because of the skills it takes to do such a refinement!"

Jax stares. "I just said necklace making would be nice. And any types of necklaces are nice. Personaly, I love working with metals. I feel like I have an endless imagination when I'm working with metals!"

Natali snorts "Metals? Well, that /is/ a popular specialty here...personally, I perfer wood." she says with a grin. That's good though that you have an idea of your future. So tell me, where do you hail from anyway?" She asks, trying not to sound too much like a hag. Kassanna nods and grins. "Oh good. I thought I was seeing things and that wouldn't be a good thing. Not at all." She chuckles a bit and sighs.

Jax doesn't think you sound like a hag. "Well, truthfully, I'm from here and there. I like to travel a lot. I've seen some nice sites around, so I don't really hail from anywhere. But I was born at Tillek."

Natali nods her head "That's all I wanted, thank you. Tillek? I know some people up that way. Personally, it's a little too cold for me, but that's just my opinion. Tell me what you think the Smith's do besides what was already mentioned."

Jax says, "What I think? Well, they design things, I should guess. But you see, I only observed my father. I never had a chance to....." A tear comes to his eye, but he rubs it. "I guess they also write up plans and design things."

Natali sighs "It goes beyond that, really. But that's alright, you're here to learn anyway, right?" she says with a chuckle "Smiths work with metal, wood, glass, mechanics...and basically anything related. They work to make simple items as apprentices to more complex items as they advance in rank. As an apprentice, you also learn how to operate a flame thrower so as to help in the ground crew to fight thread."

Jax shivers at the sound of Thread. "Well, I did say that's what I thought, and I'd be really happy to learn as much as possible. Glass you say? That sounds really interesting!" He thinks a second. A few things for his mother wouldn't hurt that much, would it? "And wood sounds really nice. It seems all nice! I wouldn't be able to chose at all!"

Natali stands up and walks around to the other side of the table where Jax remains sitting, placing the wherhide in a pocket. "Now, the watchwords of the smith apprentice are 'Knowledge' and 'Honor'. It's the goal of the appy to gain all of the knowledge that the craft has to offer. This can be obtained by studying after each lesson and learning on a first hand experience, working under the guidance of a master. By devoting your time to studying, you are able endow the honor it is to be a smith apprentice. Do you understand?"

Jax shrugs for a moment, as if not to make a mistake of some sort, then he nods. "Yes, I do understand."

Natali nods "The hammer and the quill are the tools of the apprentice. The hammer teaches the apprentice to keep an open mind and bend the unaccepting prejudices to accept hard truth. With the quill, the Apprentice learns to record what is learned in order to give those who come afterward a higher foundation on which to build. Are you still following me?"

Jax nods. "I think I do..."

Natali half grins 'It's very important that you remember such words, as they will come back to you periodically. in order for an apprentice to advance, they must fulfill several requirements, but you will learn about these later. Do you have any questions for me?"

Jax shakes his head. "When I will, I will be sure to ask you."

Natali holds out her hand "Please let me be the first to welcome you as the Smithcraft's newest apprentice. Unfortunately, I don't have a knot currently for you, so you'll have to see one of the masters back at the hall."

Jax nods. "Don't worry. I will. Thank you!" And there, he goes to get lost in this new place.

Jax goes home.
