Oral Examination
of Apprentice Agrajag
December
12, 1998
You strides quickly
into the office.
Smith Office
This room has been
striped of a mele of cots and toys which have been moved too
the new children's room. The room is stark and bare except for
a desk along one wall, and a few scattered wooden chairs along
each wall. The shelves have been filled with papers and tools,
ink bottles charsticks, paper, and other odds and ends. A well
make portrait of the family hangs on the wall above the desk.
Baskets set into the wall are filled with sweet-smelling herbals.
Evan is here.
Obvious exits:
Children's Room Bedroom
Craftworks
Cera gracefully moves
into the office.
Evan nods to Cera and
Paric, "Evening... you ready to grill him?"
Cera nods to Evan,
"Hello.."
Cera grins, "I
have been waiting a long time to return the favor to someone..."
finding herself a comfortable seat.
Evan motions the pair
to the two charis flanking his desk... present a united front.
always intimidating.
Evan takes a small
note, opens it, nods to himself, and then ties it to Feisty's
leg after the blue settles down and sends him off after the Apprentice.
Paric chuckles and
shakes his head, "Yea...one could say that." He takes
a seat next to the desk and sits down.
Cera laughs softly
as she straightens her clothes and tries to wipe the smirk off
her face, glancing towards the door for a moment, then at Paric,
"Well love we have been here a few times haven't we?"
Evan chuckles softly
at Cera's comment, but says nothing.
Paric chuckles and
nods, "Yes love, we have at that."
Cera laughs lightly
and winks at Paric, "Well things have most certainly come
full circle now..."
Agrajag walks into
the office.
Agrajag walks in, almost
running, "you wanted me?"
Cera closes her eyes
for a moment, then looks up as Agrajag enters the room, nodding
in his direction, she glances at Evan.
Evan nods to Agrajag
and points to the Center of the room, "Please wait there."
there isn't anyplace to sit near there... presumably the apprentice
is to stand.
Evan picks up a piece
of paper from his desk and glances over it, re-reading it before
passing it to Paric, and a copy to Cera.
Agrajag nods to Evan
and walks to the center of the room and just stands there.
Cera reads carefully
over the paper, her eyes picking out the some of the comments,
and she nods her head in understanding, "Ahh.." escapes
her lips and she looks seriously at Agrajag.
Paric smiles and takes
the paper and begins to read over it, then places it back on
a corner of the desk within arms reach.
Evan waits a moment
for Cera and Paric to look over the letter and continues, "That
is a summary of all you've done here, prepared by the masters
working the closest with you. With what it says, I feel it is
time for a change in your rank." He pauses for a moment
and then continues, "But we have several questions, first."
Agrajag nods, his nervousness
showing as one of his hands starts to twitch a little.
Evan frowns, "First
off, I'd like to hear your thoughts on what you've accomplished
as a Smith."
Agrajag pauses for
a moment to collect his thoughts before he answers. "I have
attended lessons and learned the methods of our Craft. I have
also practiced those methods and helped other Apprentices to
learn those methods. I have also learned of the honor that is
involved in being a Smith and what the quality of a Smith's work
means to him or her."
Evan raises a brow,
"The honor of being a smith? Could you give me a one-sentance
explanation of what you mean by that?"
Cera nods as she listens,
some thoughts forming in her head as she considers what he has
said.
Cera looks at Agrajag,
"And you have learned methods of the craft? could you please
give me an expample of some of them?"
Agrajag replies, "The
Honor of a being a Smith is what a Smith feels when they realize
how much their work can help the other people on Pern."
Agrajag nods to Cera,
glad to have a little bit easier question, "Everything from
learning to proper way to join two pieces of wood together to
making the mold for a ring."
Cera nods silently,
"But is that all that you have learned?"
Cera sighs, "Don't
you feel that there other methods besides the actuall skill of
joining two pieces of wood?"
Evan nods, "And
other things to learn than procedures?"
Evan chuckles softly,
"Shards, if that's true, than anyone could be a great smith
by following a manual."
Cera nods, "Yes.."
she says as she agree's with Evan.
Agrajag shakes his
head, "I've also learned how figure out how to solve different
types of problems."
Cera nods, "What
problems...and what problems have you found?"
Agrajag adds in, "the
types of problems that need a new device to be made or to try
to think of something no one else has thought of before in order
to more efficently do a certain task."
Evan frowns, "Even
that can be cataloged and written down. Tell me something you've
learned that can't be explained in a book."
Evan says, "Or,
at least, something that can't be learned from reading about
it."
Agrajag ponders for
a moment, "I've learned what its like to help someone by
giving them a tool that makes there work easier, I've also learned
the obedience that it takes to make an almost flawless item that
you are sure will last."
Evan shakes his head,
"That's not what I meant... I was referring to a skill,
or a way of going about a task that can't be taught by rote.
Something that is more than simple knowledge."
OOC: Evan says "and
I think you mean 'dicipline' not 'obedience'"
OOC: Agrajag says "yeah,
I think you're right :)"
Agrajag nods trying
to think of a way to word it, "That is what I was trying
to say with solving problems, I've learned how to look at any
problem I face and analyze it, figure out the best way to approach
the task then carry through with it, I'm not even sure how to
word it, I don't see how anyone can figure it out from a book."
Paric scratches his
cheek then looks at Agrajag as a question forms in his mind,
"Agrajag, as you are aware, the flamethrower plays a very
important role in the elimination of thread. Could you please
tell us the principle behind the operation of the flamerthower."
Agrajag nods, "It
contains a tank of the very flammable liquid, agenothree, it
is given a small spark when it passes through the nozzle which
results in flame shooting out and charring the Thread."
Paric leans forward,
his elbows resting on his knees, his chin on his hands. "The
chemical used in the flamer performs several roles. Can you please
tell us about those roles and any side benefits?"
Agrajag says, "Agenothree
can also be used as a fertalizer, so when charring Thread over
plants, you are helping them grow not only by keeping Thread
away, but also by spreading the fertalizer on them."
Evan raises a brow,
"That didn't answer half of the question."
Evan says, "What
are the multiple ways Agenothree is an effective agent in the
attack against thread?"
Agrajag starts listing
the ways, "It can flow into Thread burrows and drown the
Thread.."
Paric leans back and
awaits for the completion of the apprentice's answer, "Anything
else?"
Agrajag continues,
"It is also ignitable, as I said before, when on the ground
or in the air, causing the Thread to burn. It also has the added
benefit of being a fertalizer, so it doesn't caused problems
if any of it is dropped accidently."
Paric nods, "Very
good. " He glances briefly at Cera, Evan, then back at Agrajag.
"You have been specializing in woodcraft. As you know, I
have a particular affinity to that specialty. With that in mind,
could you please give us several examples of various joints used
in woodcraft."
Agrajag nods, "There
are dovetail joints, butt joints, rabbet joints, groove joints,"
he pauses for a moment to think, "and dado joints. Am I
missing any?"
Evan shrugs, "That's
enough. What are the differences between a hardwood and a softwood,
and in what types of things would you use each type.
Agrajag nods, "Softwoods
are from conifers, and hardwoods come from disiduous trees. Hardwoods
are usually more durable, they would be used for a major support
if you wanted something to last for countless Turns, softwoods
are more easy to work and would be better for doing an intricate
carving."
Evan nods, "how
would you quickly tell if a board was hardwood or softwood?"
Agrajag says, "The
easiest way would be to try to take a small chuck out of it and
see how hard the wood is, but that obviously would not wise on
a piece of wood that has already been worked."
Evan says, "It
is possible to do it non-destructively. How?"
Agrajag ponders, "You
should be able to tell by looking at the grain."
Paric rubs his chin
then asks, "Please give us several examples of fasteners
used to hold two pieces of wood together."
Agrajag doesn't take
but a second to come up with this answer, "There are nails,
screws, hinges, and glue."
Paric smiles and nods,
"Hide glue, as you already know, is a type of fastener.
Could you please give us two reasons for using this type of glue.
In addition, could you please tell us what it is made out of?"
Evan nods, "Name
two ways to fasten wood together without metal fasteners. The
dovetail joint does not count."
Evan says, "Nor
does glue." :>"
Agrajag looks from
one Master to the next then decides to answer Paric first sense
he asked first, "Two reasons to use hideglue is that the
joint can be taken apart and redone if you do not do it correcty
the first time, and it is also somewhat easier to use than other
methods, such as wooden dowels" he grins, answering both
Masters at once, even though he can't come up with a second response
to Evan's question.
Evan pauses a moment,
and adds, "dowels, and...?"
Agrajag ponders for
a moment, "Glue, joints, dowels.. those are the only non-metal
fastners I can think of."
Evan raises a brow,
"What about mortise and tenon joints? or Biscuit joints?"
Paric smiles and nods,
"...splines..."
Evan frowns, "What
are the tools of the smith apprentice?'
Agrajag nods to Evan,
"I thought your comment on dovetail's included all types
of joints." He then quickly answers the next question, "The
Hammer and Quill"
Evan says, "And
they are meant to remind you of what?"
Agrajag says, "The
hammer reminds me to break open the closed mind and accept the
truth, the quill reminds me to record what I learn, that way
knowledge will not be forgotten."
Evan says, "The
watchwords of an apprentice are, as I'm sure you know, Knowledge
and Honor. Why are they useful?"
Agrajag says, "They
are usefull because they help remind an Apprentice of why he
is here, to learn, and to bring honor to himself and his Craft."
Evan nods, and sits
back, slightly, allowing Cera and paric to ask any remaining
questions.
Cera nods to Evan,
"Well Agrajag...when you entered the SmithCraft we talked
about what was in your heart...how much devotion that it took.
Please tell me why you think you have what it takes to be an
affective Journeyman?"
Agrajag says, "I
believe that I have to ability to function fully as a Smith,
not only here in the CraftHall, but elsewhere were I won't have
Masters around to help guide me and watch over everything I do."
Cera says, "But
Agrajag, we all work together to further the SmithCraft and all
that it entails. It is not a matter of being under the watchful
eye of a Master...you learn from all of us..as we learn from
you. It is a devotion to the craft that needs to be there and
teach that to others outside the craft. What are you going to
give to those people that will show your devotion to the craft
you uphold as the utmost I would hope in your life..""
Agrajag says, "I
will give them whatever I can. I will help them solve any problems
they might have as well as helping make sure they are not in
need of any items or materials a Smith can help to supply."
OOC: Agrajag says "sorry,
read the question wrong at first, had a long answer, then realized
it was to the wrong question"
OOC: Cera says "No
prob"
Evan frowns at Agrajag,
"We spoke earlier of Honor, now I have a question of loyalty.
Where does your loyalty lie? To the SmithCraft? to Pern? or to
yourself?"
Agrajag takes a moment
to answer as he has not yet seriously thought about this question,
"I have learned in my experiences that my loyatly to the
SmithCraft is much stronger than my loyalty to myself, and my
loyatly to Pern is stronger than my lotyalty to the Craft, for
the SmithCraft is but only one part of Pern."
Evan nods, and looks
to Paric and Cera checking if they have any other questions.
Cera shakes her head
no.
Evan frowns, considering,
and pushes a small box on his desk towards Cera, "If you
would?"
Cera stands, moving
next to the box, she looks at Agrajag carefully.
Agrajag eyes the box,
a smile coming to his face as he realizes exactly what is happening.
Cera picks up the box,
weighing it carefully in her hand, she says, "Well Agrajag
you have come a long way...and yet you have an even longer road
to travel...wear this with pride.." handing him the box,
"And allow me the first of honour of saying..Congratulations
Journeyman Agrajag."
Agrajag takes the box,
a big grin on his face, "Thank you Master Cera." he
then slowly opens the box and replaces his knot, putting his
old knot in the box.
Evan nods and stands,
offering his hand to the new Journeyman, "Congratulations
indeed.
Agrajag grins and gladly
shakes Evan's hand.
Agrajag looks around
as if he's not quite sure what to do at this point.
Cera gracefully moves
to the Craftworks.
Agrajag walks to the
Craftworks.
