Oral Examination of Apprentice Dale
Day Two

February 13, 1999

Craft Hall (#10476)

Apprentices, Journeyman, and Masters move about carefully applying their skills to the myriad specialties represented here. A cacophony of noise spills out into the room from the surrounding work areas, a symphony to the ear of a Smith. Displayed prominently in the northwest corner of the room is a large wooden framed display case with glass panels. Contained on its shelves are a wondrous variety of finely crafted objects created by members of the SmithCraft. In the southwest corner, a downward spiraling staircase leads into the access tunnels allowing the crafter's access to and from SmithCraft Hall, so they remain actively plying their trade even during Thread fall.

To the east, you see one person.

Obvious exits:

You go to the MetalCraft Area.

Forge (#4353)
This massive forge's masonry is still relatively clean from it's recent rebuilding. The firebed area spans better than two arm lengths across. It's bellows have handholds for two Apprentices to grab for firing the largest of fires. A smaller auxiliary bellows protrudes beside the main bellows. An assortment of iron working tools lay close to hand around this forge, heavy duty hangers are embedded in the mortar, and overhead pulleys hang ready to help lift works too heavy for a man to lift.

In the forge, the coals are cold. You might want to 'light fire' to get it going again.

Dale walks in from the Craft Hall.

Cera smiles as she looks at Dale's approach, "Hello there..."

Dale looks up as he walks in slowly, "Hello Master Cera." He thinks for a moment as he smiles to her, "Master Paric told me to come here today to see you."

Cera nods, "Yes that is very true Dale...and this is somewhat serious....since we are continuing on with your Orals....I would like you to do a demonstration for me....Could you please light the forge?"

Isolt walks briskly, her hips gently swaying and her hair swinging softly from side to side in from the Craft Hall.

Cera nods to Isolt, "Hello Isolt...and how are you this fine day?"

Isolt yawns, covering her mouth with her hand, "Huh? Oh, right...erm, tired, Master Cera. Very *yawn* tired." She smiles at Cera, and nods at Dale.

Cera nods as she listens to Isolts reply, moving without wasting any motoin, she turns to a piece of metal that is on a bench and checks the quality of the work waiting for Dale to begin.

Dale nods as he walks to the forge slowly looking inside it, "Sure I will light it." He takes some new coals and places them on the firebed. Slowly he turns and nods to Isolt before he goes on. After he looks over to cera he takes some water and places it on the coals and waits for it so soak in.

Cera smiles and nods, "Very good Dale...though I do have a question....when you are placing the coals in the firebed do you put them all around or in a certain pattern?"

Isolt rests her elbows on the nearest workbench, listening, having never taken many Metalsmith classes before. She watches Dale building up the fire with interest, although she still yawns silently to herself every now and again.

Dale looks to the coals after the water has soaked it and he stands up and reaches for a old rag. When he is sure that the rag is of little value he looks to Cera, "Well when you first put them it you lay them all around. But after the water is soaked in it you move the coals in the center to the outside." He then reaches for the central coals and moves them to the outside on the pile, "And next you take this rag." He hold up the rag for Master Cera to see, "And light it on fire before putting it in the forge and use and blower to light the flame." He looks up to Cera to see if he is right?

OOC: Dale says "sorry for the spam"

Cera nods, "Very good Dale....though make sure that when using the blower you do it gently just to keep the flames going...seems like you know how to do that....why don't you add the kindling and get this into a big roaring fire."

OOC: Dale says "BTW is Paric going to come on?"

OOC: Cera says "He is doing stuff upstairs"

OOC: Dale says "ok"

Isolt yawns again, not wanting to intterupt, she turns to Cera, "I've gotta go clean out my runner. I'll be seeing you all later, I s'pose!" She grins to Cera, and winks to Dale, before moving quietly out.

Isolt walks briskly, her hips gently swaying and her hair swinging softly from side to side to the Craft Hall.

Dale nods and light the rag on fire slowly before placing it in front of the blower. Slowly the fire starts just a little befreo Dale adds a little kindling and watches the fire starts to grow a little at the time, "Well if you use to little kindling then the fire will go out. On the other hand too little and it will get out of hand."

Isolt hugs Cera! Cera enfolds you in a warm embrace and gives you a gentle squeeze.

OOC: Dale says "I think I RP{ better with you then Paric. I don't know why that is"

Cera nods carefully as she listens to Dales explanation, "Very good....while you are doing that...Do you think that you could show me how you heat the metal?"

OOC: Cera says "It happens :)"

Sep blinks in from ::between::!

Dale smiles as he walks over to a knife he has been working on a little, "WOuld it be on if I use this? I have been working on this a little at the time." He picks up the knife and a small anvil. Hw walks back to the forge and starts to laugh, "I spent all last night just learning everything about this one tool." He sits the anvil on a small table and takes the knife and places the end of it on the outside of the fire.

Cera chuckles, "Very good apprentice Dale...it is a wonderful thing when one tends to study and make sure that you know what you are supposed to. Though one would hope that you know this stuff before you get to the point that you are taking your orals."

Cera grins, "Now...you think that you feel comfortable enough working with the things around the forge? do you have any questions before I speak with Master Paric?"

Dale nods and smiles checking the knife befrore looking up at Cera, "Well I did not expect to be asked a questions on it." He smiles and tsands up slowly, "But I will be ready next time." Slowly he bends down and sits on the ground and takes a wet cloth and pulls the knife out as he places the end in the water. He smiles and looks up at Cera, "Yes I feel very good around the forge, and I can't think of any questions right now mentor."

Cera nods, "Well Dale...I think that is enough...I am satisfied with the questions that I had in my mind are answered I will forward my stuff to Master Paric. I hope that knife turns out well and let me see it when you are finished. You should be proud of all that you have accomplished and all that you will accomplish in the future." turning towards the door Cera smiles and waves as she leaves.

OOC: Dale says "a third wait. Well I think I did well"

Cera pauses, "Oh and Dale, I am sorry...." tossing a box towards him, "Could you please put your Apprentice Knot in this box....I need to give it back to Evan."

Dale smiles and nods, "I will let you see the knife when I am done. It should be finished in about another sevenday." He waves as Cera turns to leave and taks off his knot and hands it back to Cera, "As you request." Slowly he walks back to the forge and places the knife back in it, "Last I am always happy with what I do."

Cera smiles and nods to Dale, moving back towards the table near the forge, placing another box down on its surface, "You may want to don this knot instead...."

Dale looks up at her as he nods and takes the box and opens it slowly. He he looks inside and smiles and places the contents on the table before removing the knot out of the forge and back in the water, "Thank you."

Cera laughs, "Congrats Dale I think that you have been doing a wonderful job."

Dale smiles and nods as he closes the second box and hands it back to Cera, "Thanks." He looks to the forge and shakes his head, "I think I am going to take the rest of the day off."

Cera just chuckles and nods, moving towards the door, "Much deserved.....I will see you later Dale..." and she leaves.
