Oral Examination of Apprentice Dale
Day One

February 12, 1999

SmithCraft Office

A large desk is the most obvious piece of furniture in this room. Several chairs line the wall, as well, a long table where the Smithcraft masters occassionally meet to discuss matters of import.

Baskets set into the wall are filled with sweet-smelling herbals.

Obvious exits:
Craftmaster's Room Crafter's Lounge Balcony Landing

Dale walks in from the Balcony Landing

Dale is a young man of about his upper teens. His short dark brown hair almost black is toped with a hat that is well broken in and is clipped to his shirt. His shirt and pants are both of a brownish shade. His eyes are light blue.

Strapped around Dale's waist is a belt with an attached knife and pouch.

Dale's single twisted red and white shoulder loop shows that he is a Smith Senior Apprentice.

Dale is 20 Turns and 7 days old..

Hammer blinks in from ::between::!

Dale smiles as he walks in and bows to Paric, "Master Paric how are you doing." He smiles and looks around noding to some of the other people as he walks to a seat and sits down in front of the Smith Craftsecond.

Paric looks up and notices Dale. "Ah...Dale. Could you please take this note to Bryon. Then report back to me."

Paric carefully folds a small note paper and hands it to Dale.

Dale nods and stands up, "As you request." He holds his hands out for the note as he turns to walks out.

Dale walks to the Balcony Landing.

Dale walks in from the Balcony Landing.

Bryon smiles a little as he walks in from the Balcony Landing.

Bryon is five foot eleven inches tall with broad, muscular shoulders. His brown eyes seem to look from thing to thing with quick little glances from under thin brown eyebrows. His hair is a deep brown and slightly more under control now than it was turns ago. His arms are lean and tone from working at the forges. His chest makes it look that the area just under his shoulders has a barrel hidden under his tunic as his broad muscled chest leads down from this shoulders, thinning a bit at his waist leading down to a trim and muscled stomach. His arms are large and solid, his left arm having a long scar that goes from just on top of his wrist to just above his elbow.

Bryon is wearing a black tunic that stretches tight against his shoulders and has sleeves that come down to his elbows. The sleeves on the tunic are stretched from the movement of his arms. He has a pair of tan trousers on, secured at his waist with a strong belt. He has a pair of wherhide boots on his feet, completing his garment. Strapped around Bryon's waist is a belt with an attached knife and pouch. Perched on Bryon's shoulder is Paradigm. Perched on Bryon's shoulder is Princess.
Bryon seems to be wearing a ring about his finger. This is not your ordinary, everyday band-with-a-stone type ring; it seems to have an odd shape. In fact, as you see it all the way around, you can tell that it is a firelizard, wrapped in a circle around the finger. The ring is made of silver, for the most part; its surface is soft to the eye, not a harsh color. The fire lizard's wingridges are of onyx, black, and folded to its back restfully. The eyes are opal; swirling colors catch the sun dazzlingly, pale pastels whirling within the gem as in a contented fire lizard's eyes.

Bryon's double twisted red and white shoulder loop shows that he is a Smith Journeyman.

Bryon is 21 Turns, 6 months, and 23 days old.

Bryon knocks for a moment, "You wanted me, Master Paric?" he asks

Dale smiles to Paric and points to Bryon, "I delivered it." He backs back and keeps looking at the others waiting to see what they wish for him to do."

Paric smiles and nods, "Ah...Bryon. Please...could you have a seat." he says indicating a chair next to the desk. "Here..." he says sliding a small stack of papers to the corner of the desk, "You may wish to familarize yourself with these, too."

Paric smiles and looks up at Dale, "Yes...I noticed. Please stand over there," he says pointing to a spot in front of the desk. "We'll be with you in a moment."

Bryon turns the chair around so it's backwards and sits down, gettting the small stack of papers and begins looking through them as he sits down, shifting for a moment to get comfortable before nodding to Master Paric

Dale keeps standing and looking at the others. Slowly he looks to the spot and walks their turning as to not hear what the others are saying.

Paric looks back down on the papers in front of him and makes a few more notes on them. He looks up and rubs his chin, then looks over at Bryon. "Hmmm...do you have any questions before we start, Bryon?"

Bryon smiles and mutters with obvious sarcasm, "What is the meaning of life.." before shaking his head, "No, sir.."

Paric nods and then turns to Dale. Dale, I have asked you here in order that we, " he says indicating Bryon and himself, "may evaluate your continued status here at the smithcraft. Your answers today will determine that. Do you understand what I am saying?" he says in all seriousness.

OOC: Dale says "You know I am still standing right?"

OOC: Bryon nods

OOC: Paric nods, "Yes...you are still standing...just as you are supposed to."

Dale smiles and ods to Paric and Bryon, "Yes I understand that." He looks back around before looking at Paric, "As I am sure I am ready."

Bryon crosses his arms and rests them on the back of the chair, which is right in front of him due to how he turned the chair and how he is sitting

Paric frowns, "Perhaps...but that is for us to decide today." He takes the stack of papers and displays them to Dale, "These are the notes and records that the masters and journeymen have compiled on you during your stay here in the Smithcraft Hall. Some are not too flattering. This is your chance to prove them wrong... or right as the case may be." Tossing the papers back on the table, he glances over at Bryon, then back to Dale. "I understand that you prepared a scroll on cleaning forges... could you please summarize that scroll for us..."

Dale smiles and nods looking at the papers, "Well I did not know I have done that much." He smiles and thinks back slowly, "Well in the scroll I talked about some of the safty rules that need to be followed." He nods and looks to Bryon, "And I also talked about the procedures that need to be followed." He smiles looks to both of them at the same time, "Was that enough or would you want me to go into it a little deeper."

Paric nods, "Please continue..."

Dale nods and smiles, "Well when you clean a forge it is a good idea to always have someone with you. That way if something go wrong someone is their to get help." He looks up at Hammer and smiles, "Well fireliards could also be useful in a case like that."

Paric looks over at the firelizard, then at Dale. "Hmmm...is that yours?"

Bryon hmms as he glances at Paric, "I think Yari made sure all of us knew that didn't she.."

Paric glances over at Bryon and nods, "True enough...."

Dale nods and smiles up at the bronze, "Yes he is mine. He is a big help sometimes but is always with me when I go to eat." He laughs and looks at Bryon before looking back to Paric.

Paric frowns and shakes his head, "Please remove him from the room. He isn't needed here today." he says to Dale.

Bryon turns his head and glances downward with his eyes, "Should I wake these two and get them out?" he asks, motioning with a nod to the two flits, one sleeping on each shoulder

Paric turns to Bryon, "No... your's are fine."

Dale nods and looks up to his firelizard as he points to the door. Slowly the bronze jumps in the air and lands in front of the door.

Dale walks over and opens the door waving the the bronze as he flys out of the room.

Hammer glides to the Balcony Landing.

Paric nods, "Okay...Please continue with your summarization."

Dale smiles and walks back to the spot he was standing at, "Well when you clean the forge you need to first get all the old coals out. You do that by taking a shovel and placing thm in a bucket or something like that." He looks at them again and goes on, "After they are out you need to take a brush and clean the firebed. After that is clean you should replace it with new coals and go on to check so other things." He takes a step to one side and looks up trying to think or something elese to say, "Well next you would clean the bellows."

OOC: Dale says "sorry for the spam"

OOC: Bryon was expecting it.."

OOC: Dale says "well that was just about all the scroll"

Paric rubs his left hand over the front of chin, thoughtfully, then nods. "Why do you need clean the forge?"

OOC: Paric frowns, "need to clean the forge..ie."

Dale smiles and thinks slowly as he starts to rub his hands together, "Well you need to clean the forge so that it stays clean and does not break down as much."

OOC: Dale says "I was thinking"

Paric frowns and shakes his head, "Hmmmm....what do you mean by break down?"

Bryon hmms, "Well, Dale, are there any other things that need cleaned with the forge?"

Dale thinks, "Well so that it stays working. If it is not cleaned every few sevendays then it will not be working as good as it can be."

OOC: Dale says "sorry for being idle. I just found out a kid were killed at my school's dance yesterday. Another was hurt."

OOC: Paric smiles and nods.

OOC: Bryon says "no worries"

OOC: Bryon hasta go afk for a minute...

OOC: Paric nods.

OOC: Dale says "I am luckly I did not go. Well on with the orals"

OOC: Dale says "BTW how am I doing?"

Paric scratches the back of his head and awaits Dale's answer to Bryon's question.

OOC: Dale says "sorry Bry I lost it in the spam"

OOC: Paric grins, "I have asked only two questions...Bryon, one, and we've got many more to go..."

Dale smiles and nods, "Well when you clean the bellows you need to be sure nothing is between the airtight slodes." He thinks and starts to draw a picture of some bellows on a desk, "Well the nozzle need to be cleaned and you need to be sure that they still work."

OOC: Dale says "I know"

OOC: Paric says "slodes?"

OOC: Dale says "slides sorry"

OOC: Bryon says "back"

Paric nods and looks over at Bryon.

Bryon hmms, "Are ye forgetting about where the smoke goes?"

Dale smiles, "The smoke of the forge comes out through the top. You would clean that but taking the brush and cleaning that as well. In all it is a very tough thing to do."

Bryon nods a little, "Ok... but what about the chimney lad?"

Dale thinks again, "that is what I was talking about. You clean it with a brush and check to be sure that nothing is blocking the smoke's way out."

Paric leans forward at the desk, patiently awaiting the apprentice's answer.

OOC: Dale says "Paric were you just late or did I miss your question"

OOC: Paric says "awaiting your answer to Bryon's question...""

OOC: Dale says "ok just late"

Bryon nods a little, "Also you need to make sure the ash is emptied if there is any in the chimney.."

Dale nods and smiles, "I will remember that." He looks back around and then back to Bryon and Paric, "Ok."

Paric smiles and nods, "Dale, can you please tell me what a 'clinker' is? And why they are not desirable in a forge fire."

OOC: Dale says "Oh no!!!"

Dale thinks and looks at Paric as he shakes his head, "I am not sure I know for sure." He thinks and shakes his head, "I am sorry but I do not know. I would like to learn through."

Paric frowns, "I'd have figured that you would have learned about that with as many times you have been told to clean the forge." he says shaking his head. "A clinker is basically coal that has melted down into an almost glass like state. It can reduce the eveness of the fire ... and therefore the metal you are working on may not heat correctly...as well... it can also prevent the fire from burning properly as the clinkers block the nozzle opening."

OOC: Bryon says "brb"

OOC: Bryon says "back"

Dale nods and bows to Paric, "Ok. Thanks for telling me master." He thinks for a moment, "Well do they have any good parts to them? If the fire gets too out of control then it could help calm it back down right?"

Bryon cocks an eyebrow at Dale's answer but doesn't say anything

Paric nods, "However, one should always be in control of their fire and not let it get out of control. The key to proper metalcrafting is control of the fire. To prevent clinkers when you find them is part of that."

Dale nods and smiles, "Yes I know. I don't work with the forge unless I am with a Journeyman or master." He looks to Paric and thinks, "And I understand about clinkers, I think."

Paric scratches his forehead, "Okay...Dale, can you describe the parts of an anvil and give me a use for each?"

Dale gulps and shakes his head, "I am sure it was talked about in one of my classes but right now I am not sure about it." He looks at Paric and shakes his head, "But I do not remember right now."

Bryon cocks an eyebrow and quietly says, "That's surprising, you should know that by heart... since that is one of our tools.."

Dale thinksand smiles, "Well if you would tell me the parts I could tell you what each of them do."

Paric smiles and nods, "The horn?"

OOC: Dale says "You are both laughing at me now arent you"

OOC: Bryon shakes his head, "Nope... if the thing about the clinker had been asked at my oral I wouldn't have known.."

OOC: Dale says "well you are not in the metal subcraft"

OOC: Paric chuckles, "Actually...he would have been asked it too...."

OOC: Bryon shrugs, "So... ICly gemcrafters still use the forge... and do many of the same things with them as glasscrafters do

OOC: Paric smiles, "and metal crafters..."

Dale thinks and tryes to remember, "Well I would guess that that is the part that is used to shape the metal in different ways." He takes a small guess and looks to the others to see how wrong he is."

OOC: Dale says "I have no clue what the horn is."

Paric nods his head, "Yes...that is true. The horn is used to help bend metal."

Dale smiles and lets out a breath he has been holding after he answered the question, "Ok. Well anything elese on this subject." He left hand starts to shake, "Well that was a minature guess."

OOC: Paric nods. "Don't worry about it right now. Just do your best...and if we think you need to do a little more studying..."

OOC: Dale says "well I know the flamer and the watch words and the tools. I studied that and my scroll a lot"

Paric nods. "Okay...why don't we look at another aspect of the smithcraft. As you know, the flamethrower is a very important tool in dealing with thread. Can you describe the major components of the flamer?"

Dale smiles and thinks, "Well you have a fuel tank, hose, and pressure gauge. T gauge will let you know how much ageenothree is in the tank." He thinks and smiles nwow that he has a question that he knew, "All the things need to be checked and be sure that it all is in good working order."

Paric nods, "You mentioned ageenothree. Can you please tell us how this chemical work in the destruction of thread? As well, could you please describe any side benefits to its use?"

Dale nods, "Well it kills the thread by incinerating it." He thinks for a moment, "Well one good thing is has it that it is a good fertilizer and helps plant life. I am not sure about that last part but I do know that it makes great fertilizer." He smiles and looks at Paric, "Your wife tought that class very well."

Paric nods and chuckles, "Thank you...and you are correct. Though...the ageenothree also will drown thread in burrows."

Dale smiels and nods, "Ok."

Paric smiles and rubs his chin, "Hmmm...can you please tell us what the watchwords are for the apprentice?

OOC: Bryon says "sorta idle... g/f on the phone"

Dale nods and smiles, "Well the watchwords or knowledge and honor. Knowledge is ment so that we can learn as much as I can. I feel thatis something important to have." He theinks and finished the question, "Last Honor is so that we bring honor to the craft and to ourselves."

OOC: Dale says "ok"

Paric nods, "And the tools?"

"The tools are the hammer and quill." Dale thinks for a moment before he goes on, "The hammer we learn how to break open our closed minds and learn to accept what ever happens. Also with the quill we learn to help others and record what is tought to us in our classes."

Paric rubs the back of his neck as he thinks about his next question, "Hmmmm...Where does your loyality lie? To the Smithcraft? To Pern? or to yourself?"

Dale thinks, "Well all of them. I am loyal to myself which makes me loyal to the smith craft. If I am loyal to the smith craft then I have to help pern which makes me loyal to pern as well." He looks to Paric to see if he understands.

Paric nods his head, then turns to Bryon. "Hmmm...okay. Do you have any more questions to ask of Dale?"

Bryon shakes his head.

Paric smiles and nods, "Okay." He turns back to Dale, "That will be all for now. Tomorrow you will report to Master Cera down in the Metal Craft. That will be all. Thank you."

Dale nods and smiles, "Ok I will do that." He turns to walks out but stops at the door and looks back at Bryon and Paric, "Thank you both."

Paric nods. "You are most welcome Dale."

Paric looks at Dale, "Anything else?"

Dale shakes his head, "No sir. I will be going. See ya."

Dale walks to the Balcony Landing.
