As the Smith Hall Turns

Part X

February 7, 2001

Jaina moves silently in from the Common Room.

The clothe over Ara's eyes is dry and Ara seems more flushed then usual.

Jaina moving over to Ara's cot, the healer replaces the dry clothe with a cool, damp on. A tiny scowl is shot towards the apprentice before the boy frown and makes his way out. He's relieved of his duty now, the healer looks at the woman's flushed face and frowns intensely, dabbing another damp rag over her forehead and cheeks as she perches upon her stool.

Arakiel groans softly, too lost in delirium to doing anything but moan. She's very flushed..

Jaina shakes her head again, murmuring to herself as she pats the cool rag over Ara's forehead. This isn't good, not good at all.

Arakiel is lost in the maze of her fever, groaning softly.

Jaina sighs softly as she rests the cool rag on the woman's forehead and then glances around, the apprentices are all out and she doubts the other healers in the smithhall are even around, prolly swimming at Ista or the likes. So she's on her own for now, and she puts a hand to Ara's cheek to feel her temerature...

Arakiel's skin is very hot to the touch.

Jaina pulls a think blanket from under the cot and lays it over Ara in hopes of sweating the fever out, the Journeywoman arches an eyebrow and thinks a momment before she takes the now hot rag from her paitent's head and dipping it in cool water and then dabbing it over the lady's flushed cheeks in silence.

Arakiel groaning softly, as her skin is hot, flush and dry. No sweat. not good.

No, not good at all, and Jaina's dark eyes hold shadows of worry in their depths. The Journeywoman sighs and then keeps dabbing at Arakiel's forehead, shaking her head repeatedly, there's not much that they can do, except to try sweating the fever out, trying to get her to drink, and keep her face cool.

Arakiel is still, no fighting or stirring, just breathing deeply.

Jaina mms quietly, at least she's not resisting the meds, yet she's very hot, a bad fever, if it gets any higher she could even die...so it had better go down. Jaina still dabs with the cloth, but she then dips it into cool water again before continuing, speaking soft, reassuring words quietly.

Arakiel sighs softly. Evan isn't here. He's the only one she'll listen to, calling her back.

Jaina rests her free hand on the woman's arm lightly, reassuringly. But sometimes only signifigant others can help. She keeps the cool cloth on Ara's forehead as she glances around the darkened infirairy, she'll do her best, yup.

Arakiel groaning softly, sinking into the delirium.

Jaina hmmms quietly and keeps the cools cloths on Ara's forehead, her eyes watching her closely.

Arakiel sighs, as she tries to turn her head, licking her hot dry lips.

Jaina hmms quietly and traces the damp rag gently over the smith's lips before rinsing, and smoothing the rag over Ara's forehead.

Arakiel sighs feeling the coolness on her lips but she's still very hot.

Jaina runs the cloth over her lips again, since they seem as dry, if not dryer, than some of the rest of her skin.

Natel walks in from the Gathering Hall.

Arakiel sgroaning softly, her skin flush, dry and very very hot to the touch.

Following behind one of the apprentices, the small slim figure of Natel comes into the infirmary at a quick pace muttering something under his breath. Judging from his hair he hadn't time to truly collect himself,"Jaina, you're here? What is her current status?"

Jaina looks up and leaves the cool cloth on Ara's forehead as she approaches Natel "She's very hot, burning to the touch and her skin is dry. I haven't been able to get her fever to break and she only had her medicine a couple of hours ago." she says, her dark eyes concerned.

Arakiel groans softly, licking her hot dry lips.

"How long has she been ill? WHat's her heart beat? Is it normal or irregular?" Natel says,"What have you been using to treat her?" He finally makes it to them, looking Arakiel over,"What is wrong with her exactly?"

Jaina listens paitently to the questions before answering in a quiet voice "She has been ill four sevendays. Her heartbeat is faster than normal, but not by much. I've been using a tea of tuft grass with something Sudanna added to it, and I have been giving her that every four hours." she says, glancing up at Natle after she spares a glance at Arakiel "She has firehead." she adds finally.

"What did Sudanna add?" Natel asks and then looks at Arakiel again,"Any signs of hallucination? How fast is her heart beat? How long has she had firehead?"

Arakiel's breathing is regular but swallow, her pulse rate is a tad fast and her skin is hot and dry.

Evan glides silently in from the Gathering Hall.

Jaina paintently listens to Natel before answering his questions again "I don't know what she added, just something froma brown jar. She said that if I was asked, to just say it was hers. She never told me what it was." the healer says, crossing her arms a momment as she glances down at Arakiel "She has halucinated in the last two nights and day. But not before that. Her heartbeat is just slightly faster than normal, not enough to be absolutely noticable but I heard it. And she's had firehead for four sevendays." she says, repeating a few things here and there as she nods to Evan.

Odd... Although Natel doesn't say that. Instead he just says,"We need to bathe her in some cold water. She's too hot and dry. After we soak her for a little while we will give her a dose of the tea again. " His voice is soft and spoken directly to Jaina,"As for the pulse maybe once we get her cooled the heart beat may slow a little. Sometimes blood moves faster when it gets hotter."

Arakiel groans softly, licking her dry lips.

Evan nods to Jaina before he moves to sit next to Arakiel. "Helly love."

Jaina taps her chin "I thought we might need to put her in cool water, but I was trying to seat out her fever first..." the healer says nodding quickly, "I believe that you're right and her pulse is quicker because of all the heat her body is retaining." she says, her eyes flicking from Evan to Natel.

Arakiel sighs as deep somewhere within, recognizes Evan's voice but it seems so far away.

Evan loks up and blinks, "She's getting worse." It's hard to tell whether his statement is a question or not.

Cera gracefully moves in from the Gathering Hall.

"Yes she is and standing around like that is not helping us any. Now, either help us get her to some cool water or get out of the way." Natel says spining to look up at Evan,"There is a lot of work we have to do right now so kindly get us a tub filled with some water." Oddly enough Natel doesn't seem too afraid of Evan, more professionally annoyed.

Arakiel groans softly, unable to even call for Evan.

Cera peers carefully around the corner to see if Arakiel is awake. Noticing Evan and the healer she stands there very quietly to see if her presence is going to be disturbing if she were to enter.

Jaina nods towards Evan "I assure you that we are doing what we can for her right now." she adds to Natel's statements, she looks towards Natel before looking back at Arakiel and taking the second cloth from her forehead and dropping it silently into the small pail of water she had.

Evan nods to Natel and leans out the door to send two drudges for a tub and water.

Cera walks almost smack into Evan as he goes for the drudges, "Oh excuse me Evan...I came to check up on Ara.."

"Jaina, brew up some of the tuft tea. Make it double strength. Do /not/ add any of Sudanna's extras. We're going to pour it into the water as well. Maybe if she soaks some of it in through her skin it may aid." Natel frowns slightly at Cera for a minute but shakes his head. More people in the infirmary than he usually trusts. Especially with something as volatile as firehead but oh well. "You." Pointing to Cera,"Do you know where some longer cloths can be had. I may need to wrap her entire body in them to draw out the heat."

Evan scowls, clearly worried for his wife, but moves away as the drudges arrive with the tub and begin filling it.

Cera nods and says, "I am sure that I can drag some up from the stores...not a problem..how many?" she asks questioningly to the healer as she backs towards the door again.

Jaina nods silently and goes to the other side of the infirmairy to start brewing up the extra strong tuft tea, her movements are smooth and quick and the tea is well started as she turns around to watch the scene across the way.

Arakiel groans softly, too hot, too lost within herself.

Cera gracefully moves to the Hallway.

"Two times as many as would be needed to wrap around her." Natel responds smoothly and then fixes Evan with a calm gaze, silver eyes flat,"Ser, would you be so kind as to move your wife into water and quickly." It takes someone bigger than Natel, course Natel's slight so that's not saying much with that he touches Arakiel's skin and takes a cloth and after dipping it in the pail by her hend runs it along her face."We'll have to begind brewing strong tuft tea. This is being rather resilient."

Cera gracefully moves in from the Gathering Hall.

Cera walks in carry...the requested material to wrap Arakiel in, "This is all I could find....it is clean...and well it won't matter what it is used for..."and without ceremony puts the 'linen' on a table.

Cera drops a pile of pink. (***hint: Dennia's prank turn into being useful.)

Jaina has already started the tea, and when the water is hot, Jaina starts brewing the tea, her deft movements seeming almost slow. When the tea is finished, she brings it over towards Natel and stands there, waiting for more orders presumably and holding the pitcher of tea.

Arakiel groans softly.

Evan pushes the blankets back from Arakiel and picks her up, carrying her to the cool bath, gently laying her down in it.

Dale walks in from the Gathering Hall.

Arakiel sighs, stiffening in Evan's arms as the cool water shocks her system.

"Pour it into the water after we let her soak for about five minutes. Then we will add more at 5 minute intervals until all the tea is in there. We don't want to raise the temperature of the water too high because then we risk increasing the body temperature." Silver eyes goto the 'linen's' but doesn't say a word except,"Thanks." Then he nods to Evan,"There isn't much you can do but keep her company. Anyone not essential is to be kept out of the Infirmary until we can break the fever." He processed to apply a fresh cloth over the old one instead of removing it.

Jaina nods and sets the pitcher on the table for the momment, nodding curtly towards Natel before glancing at all the people gathering. Five people is more than enough, especially in the darkened infirmairy. But she lets Natel handle the people as she turns back to Arakiel, her eyes narrowing slightly to define certian obstacles in her way as she moves out of the way for the momment but still in easy reach of the tea.

Cera soflty backs away from the scene knowing that at the moment her presence is only going to be a hinderance and leaves to get a cup of Klah, thinking for a moment to offer one ot Evan but changing her mind after seeing his concern.

Cera gracefully moves to the Hallway.

Arakiel groans softly, rolling her head on Evan's arms. (That is if Evan is still holding her.)

Dale comes in and stands next to Cera watching the other for a little while. He felt like he needed to at least show up and be here for a little while what this is going on. He says and does nothing other then just shifting his weight every few seconds.

Evan moves to he head of the tub to allow the healers to do whatever they need. He brushes Arakiel's hare from her face. As he notices Dale he scowls, "Out!" quickly moving to be between the Journeyman and the tub.

Dale says "You could of put it a little better" As he turns and leaves.

"You heard the man. Get out of here this instant." The small jouneryman says softer but with a tone that says he will have him escorted out if he doesn't, Natel's silver eyes blaze,"You are serving no useful purpose and we have people who are seriously ill!" His voice is like steel as he speaks. As Dale leaves he nods slightly and proceeds to begin brewing another tea of double strength,"We'll need something to sterilize and steep these clothes in the tea..."

Arakiel roll her head against the side of the bath, as if she's seaking something or someone. Everything seems sofar away.

Jaina puts a hand to her head a momment and then leans agaianst the table, glancing at Dale as he walks out and then at Natel, her eyes curious a second. Then she turns away and opens a glowbasket with a few feebly gleaming glows in it, at least its enough light to get her from her position near the bath and to the bath.

Evan moves back to the head of the tub, sitting with his wife.

Arakiel lets out a long soft sigh.

"Jaina, are you posted here? I am going to leave some instructions on how to proceed and I want to make sure they are understood." Natel says as he checks on the tea.

Jaina nods silently as she looks towards Natel "I am posted here," she says, her voice soft as she turns to lean on the table and watch Natel carefully, she wants to make sure she understands things too.

"I want you to repeat this proceedure every day. You need to keep brewing the tea this strong. Once the fever breaks stop the baths with the tea in it but you may want to keep up the baths until the fever is gone..." Natel says writing in on a piece of hide.

Arakiel licks her lips as a soft faint sound escapes her lips.

Jaina nods, okay. I understand," she says slowly, choosing her words easily as she watches the other healer. This is one thing she can do easily, if everything else fails first, follow directions.

Natel keeps writing,"Also continue brewing the stronger tea. Decrease it a 1/2 teaspoon at a time after the fever breaks. This will keep it in proportion to the fever. Once it abates you know about restrictions to her duties correct?"

Jaina nods "Yes, I know about restricting her duties..." the healer says, tilting her head to the side as she listens carefully to Natel.

Arakiel sighs softly as the water cools some of her fever but doesn't break it. But she's able to frown slightly trying to catch a thought, a name that's very important to her.

Evan sighs softly, "She's looking a little cooler at least."

Nodding slightly,"The bath should have cooled her a little. I want you to make sure you eat and drink but I want you to spend the majority of your time in here. Your presence will help. You also may want to ask the Hall harper to pay a visit and pay a few times a day. Some of the mindhealers say it helps the ill heal faster." Whether Natel himself believes that or not is not said.

Evan nods, "I'll bring my work in with me as I"ve been doing.

Jaina nods, "She is looking better, but her fever hasn't broken yet." she says quietly as she reaches the bath and touches the lady's forehead gently. "She's cooler, thats a good thing." the healer says quietly, her brown eyes not so worried or concerned now. Jaina gives a grateful smile to Natel, yet its only a small smile. She pulls a stool up to the side of the bath and sits there, her eyes not down at Ara but placed curiously, or almost curiously on Natel.

Arakiel sighs, licking her lips. Still with a slight frown of concentration, she's trying to remember something/someone. But she sighs, rolling her head back against Evan's arm.

"I am afraid I have to go for now. Jaina, let me know if there is a change. I'll come with a Master next time if there is." With that natel turns to leave for a moment and then turns back to Evan,"I am sorry if I was a little bossy but I tend to react to situations and want them efficient and too many people doing nothing is inefficient."

Jaina nods to Natel "Okay, I'll let you know if anything changes for the worse." she says, her eyes gleaming in the low glowlight.

Arakiel sighs as she starts to slide into the water. Well her coloring is improved but she's still a bit feverish.

Evan reaches forward to prevent her head from sliding beneath the surface.

Arakiel sighs as she feels Evan's touch. A very faint whisper of Evan is heard.

Natel leaves.

Jaina sighs gratefully as she touches the woman's forehead again "Shes much better, her fever has gone down alot and soon it should break, just keep her in there a little while longer." the healer says softly, grinning encouragement at Evan as she stands and strolls over towards a counter to clean up a mess.

Evan nods, "I hope you're right... for all our sakes."

Arakiel's fever is down, not feeling as hot as she did. "Evan?" come a soft hoarse whisper.

Jaina nods, "Now we need to get her to drink something." the healer says softly, getting a cup of water and offering it to Evan silently. Her dark eyes watching Arakiel a momment before the healer turns and starts to clean up the mess made by the tea.

Arakiel whispers softly, "Where?" Frowning trying to catch hold of something that eludes her.

Evan says, "You're still in the infirmary love."

Arakiel sighs, rolling her head, back, frowning slightly, "Evan?"

Jaina is called away.

Evan smiles, "yes dear?"{

Arakiel sighs as she recognizes the voice. "Evan."

Evan nods, "I"m here."

Arakiel nods, Trying to raise her hand to him.

Evan takes her hand, "JUst rest."

Darman strides in from the Gathering Hall.

Evan turns form settling Arakiel back in her cot and nods briefly to Darman.

Darman walks in munching on a sticklike orange vegetable (carrot)

Arakiel sighs as she's settled back in bed, as the tea and drugs take effect and she drifts off.

Darman eyes Arakiel's form on the bed and peers at Evan. He states nonchalantly. "How is she? Professionally of course. Personally... well let's leave that out of it."

Arakiel sighs softly as she drifts off.

Evan sighs, "not good... the Healers had her put in a cold bath to try and break her feaver."

Arakiel snuggles against Evan as she sleeps.

Darman peers at Arakiel. "An Ice bath for the..." He breaks off deciding to halt mid sentence. "Still no response? " He leaves a plethora of stingers unsaid.

Arakiel takes a deep breathe, as she slips further into sleep.

Evan shakes his head as he refastens the restraints, "She goes back and forth from unconscious to delerious."

Arakiel's breathing is deep and even as she sleeps.

Evan sighs as he sits back down, "So what have you been up to Darman?"

Arakiel sleeps on unaware of the two.
