SMITHCRAFT JOURNEYMAN

The knot of the Smith Journeyman is a red-and-white double-twist loop.  It is worn on the left shoulder ordinarily, closest to the heart.

The badge of the Smithcraft is a white roundel badge with a red anvil pictured on it.  This can be worn anywhere, but is commonly worn over the heart.

The watchwords of the Smith Journeyman are 'Judgment' and 'Service'.  As the Journeyman travels away from the home Hall, and away from the close supervision of the Masters, individual judgment becomes more and more important.  The Journeyman makes decisions alone and is seen by outsiders as representing the Craft.  For this reason, the Journeyman must strive to serve the best interests of the Smithcraft, especially in his or her service to outsiders who seek the aid of a Smith Journeyman, for service to others as well as to Craft is the goal of the Smith Journeyman.

The tools of the Journeyman are the Ruler and the Quill.  With the ruler, the Journeyman tries to follow the straightest path, both as to efficiency and as the obligations owed to Craft and kind.  With the quill, the Journeyman records the things that are learned from travelling, in order that future Journeymen may have a better map to follow.

There are five requirements for promotion from Journeyman to Master:

  1. A letter of recommendation from a non-Smith Craftmaster or Craftsecond, from a Lord Holder or Steward, or from a WeyrLeader. The Craftleader, Holder, or Weyrleader must also be someone that you have worked under during your time as a Journeyman OR  a recommendation from two masters you have worked with OR a recommendation from four Smith Journeymen you have worked with OR a recommendation from two masters or two Journeyman with SPECIAL PERMISSION FROM THE CRAFTMASTER.

  2. An outline of an IC class you will be prepared to give to Smith Apprentices on your specialty.  This class should be based on real information derived from either the McCaffrey books or outside sources on smithing (and attribution should be given).  A class would be expected to last 15-30 minutes.  It need not be terribly detailed, but should give the Apprentices a good overview of your IC specialty.

  3. An outline of an OOC class you will be prepared to give to Smith Apprentices in your track (or one of your tracks if you are multi-tracked).  This class should be 20-40 minutes in length and should actually pass on to people with less experience information you have that will help them be better programmers or writers or TinyPlot role-players.

  4. Teaching of a class (your choice) to at least two students.  The outline of the class must be turned in previously, reviewed by a Master, then returned with suggestions.  You may choose to implement the suggestions or not. After the class is taught, you should tell your students to send a report of how the class went (from their standpoint) to the Master which reviewed your outline.  You should also send a report to the same Master.  Then the Master will look them over and if you seem to have accomplished the goal of your lesson, you will have completed the requirement.

If you wish to learn more about teaching, talk to one of the Masters, have them teach you a bit about teaching, then set up a time to try out teaching a Master something to practice.

  5. An interview with the Craftmaster.
