Forge Cleaning and Safety

Smith Senior Apprentice Dale

Ever thought what to do when you are assigned to clean the forge? Well there are a few things you need to know so that you don't get hurt and the forge gets clean. When cleaning you need to be very safe, clean the firebed, and cleaned the bellows. After all this is done then the forge should be clean.

Always when cleaning anything you need to be very safe. This is also very true for the forge. It is a good idea to always you the buddy system. The system is where when you do something you have a friend who is there to help you if something goes wrong.

Burns are a problem that is not taken care of when they happen can be very serious. As soon as you get burned get too a healer as soon as you can, and also inform the Journeyman and Masters of the hall. While you are waiting to get to the healer, apply cool running water to the wound until it stops burning. That way when you get there all they have to do it dress the wound.

While cleaning the firebed there are some things that you need to check. First you need to be extra sure that the fire is out. If it is not out then put it out. You can check to see if it is out by sticking a stick in the coals. If it is red then they are still hot. Another way is by putting your hand near it and if it feel hot, then they are hot. A shovel, leather gloves, broom, brush, and a wheelbarrow would be a good idea to have. First put on your gloves and sweep the coals to you. When they are in reach take your shovel and scoop it in the wheelbarrow. Ok well you are all dirty now and you might be wondering what is next, right? Well next you take the brush and brush off the firebed. Last you replace the bed with new coals. All that is how you clean the firebed.

Ok the last part that you need to clean is the bellows. There are many parts to bellows. On the bellows there is the nozzle, airtight leather sides, and the leather flap valve. To work the bellows you press the two handles together and air rushes through the nozzle. When you pull the handles back out, air comes in through the flap valve on the bottom. When the boards are compressed, you will get a continuous current of air. When you clean bellows you need to be sure nothing is in them, and nothing is blocking the air's way out through the nozzle. That current will allow the flame to spark and get bigger.

All of these things need to be done to be sure the forge is kept clean and you stay safe. You need to not play around, clean the firebed, clean the bellows and know how to work them. Follow these few things and the forge will stay clean and you will stay safe.
