Introduction
to Glasscrafting
Instructor:
Journeyman Rand
Thursday,
March 9, 2000
With a sigh, Rand turns to face the glass
obviously a bit nervous to be teaching,"Hello everyone.
PLease have a seat and get comfortable."
Jasen walks in and finds himself a seat, sitting
down at it, ready to learn something about Smithing...
Clatse takes his seat that he had before,
sitting as comfortably as he can. He smiles at Rand's nervousness;
being new himself, Clatse was a little nervous too.
Dale smiles as he walks in slowly and bows
a little to Journeyman Rand, "Hello." He walks to the
front of the class as he pulls out a notebook to take notes,
"Good luck."
Sapphire eyes flicker onto Siofra,"Please
/sit/." Rand's voice is gentle but firm.
Jasen takes out a notebook from his backpack
and a stylus, following Dale's example..good idea to take notes...
Siofra looks up, wondering who Rand is talking
to, she's already sitting in the back of the classroom.,
Masoren strolls with a confident stride in
from the Library.
"In this class we will discuss what the
GlassCraft is as well as some of the tools used in the Craft."
Pausing briefly Rand's eyes scan the crowd as he proceeds,"DOes
anyone know what objects are made by the Glasscraft?"
Masoren strolls with a confident stride to
the Library.
Clatse looks around and pulls out his small
note book, noticing that everyone else is doing so. He raises
an eyebrow at the question, "We make lenses for the Starcarfters."
Jasen notices Masoren's entrance, and quick
turn around exit, probably not having known there was a class
in here. Jasen hadn't noticed his cousin was visiting, but he'll
have to get ahold of him later. Snapping to the question he replies
"Glass jars..."
A slight nod is given to Jasen as he says
smoothly,"That is one item. Can anyone name another? Perhaps
from another function of the craft?"
Clatse grumbles a tnot being heard the first
time, "I hear that we make lenses for the Starcraft's distanceviewers."
Jasen ums, "Lenses for glasses, too!"
Cool sapphire eyes focus intently on CLatse,"Yes
we do and I will have you watch your tone Apprentice." Rand's
voice is icy,"Yes. We make lenses. We also make ceramic
jars, clay pots, and various assorted decorative items."
Jasen feels a slight chill run down his spine
at Rand's comment to Clatse...making a mental note not to erg
Rand...and making a list of the things he mentioned in his notebook.
The housekeeper arrives to cart Dale off to
bed.
Clatse's eyes fly to his notebook, was there
an edge in his own voice? He swallows.
Jasen slightly chuckles at Dale, must've been
up to late...
"The glasscraft also works with lead
crystals." Rand stops and waits for everyone to finish taking
the notes crossing his arms in front of him and leans against
a desk,"Any questions?" is asked after a short break.
Jasen puts his hand up.
A nod of acknowledgement is given to Jasen,"Yes?"
Dale walks in from the West Tunnel.
Jasen says, "What, exactly, are lead
crystals?"
Rand hmms slightly at Jasen's question,"It
is a material similar to glass but a tad bit more dense."
Clatse raises a hand, trying to be courteous
this time.
Jasen ohhh, "Okay." He quickly writes
that down into his notebook, not wanting to forget in future...
Reighan walks in from the Gathering Hall.
Sapphire eyes flicker onto Clatse,"Yes
Apprentice?" This one did /not/ make a favourable impression
with Rand and is now suffering the consequences.
Clatse was about to sigh, but holds it in,
"Is the temperature for melting lead crystal the same as
that of glass?"
Jasen thinks that a /good/ question and gets
ready to write it down...
"Lead Crystals will melt at a /higher/
temperature than glass. Anything else?" Rand's eyes flicker
around the room.
Clatse writes down the 'higher temperature'
and looks up.
Siofra continues taking notes as she has been,
snappping out a daydream, and looking up to Rand.
Jasen writes down the higher temperature note
as well, and closes his book, having realized the time and remembering
his appointment...
Rand hmms slightly,"If no one has any
further questions, I shall move on with the tools."
Jasen walks to the West Tunnel.
Siofra looks back down at her notebook, and
scribbles down something else before waiting.
Reighan writes down some notes as he looks
down at the notebook, then glancing back up
Rand picks a pipe about five feet in length
but about 1/4" in diameter,"This is called a blow pipe.
It is used to 'blow' glass. The molten glass or lead crystal
is collected at the metal ring located at the end of the rod.
It is then 'blown' into shape. This is one of the primary glass
tools for making things just as glass jars."
Siofra nods quietly, and does a quick sketching
of it before looking back up and listening.
Rand continues,"The molten glass or lead
crystal is called a 'gather' by the way. In the next glasscraft
lesson you will learn more about terms such as that as well as
various other techniques. Any questions on a blowpipe?"
Siofra shakes her head, and scratches down
a few more notes.
Reighan shakes his head as he writes down
his notes
The blowpipe is placed back on the desk and a solid rod with
an odd ring on it,"This is called a Pontil. It is used to
put an irregular or ring-shaped mark into glass. The ring at
bottom holds the glass while it is placed against an unfinished
vessel."
Reighan nods and makes a sketch before writing
notes before it
Jesha snugs Rand! Rand is snugged!
Siofra nods quietly, and takes more notes
and sketches as she listens.
Rand hmmms slightly setting down the Pontil,"Any
questions?"
Siofra shakes her head.
The next object that is picked up is a square
piece of wood with a handle,"This is called a Battledore.
It is used to make the flat bottoms of glass vessels."
Siofra tilts her head to the side,"Why
is taht wood, and the others metal?"She asks curiously.
Rand hmms slightly,"Not /exactly/ sure.
Perhaps because the metal might metal during the time the glass
is against it. It is /always/ made of wood though."
Siofra nods quietly,"Couldn't it catch
on fire from teh heat, though?"
Rand hmms slightly,"It is treated before
being used. This is one of the traditional objects as well."
Siofra ohs quietly, and nods, scribbling those
notes down.
Rand places the battledore down and picks
up tonglike device,"This is called a Borsella, the jaws
of this device have different designs on them which are then
pressed into the hot glass to create designs."
"Any questions before I continue?"
Rand looks about at the students remaining.
Reighan shakes his head
Siofra shakes her head and takes a few more
notes.
Siofra nods quietly, and makes a few more
quick sketches.
"The block is similar to the dip mold
which is a cylindrical, one-piece mold that is open at the top
so that the gather can be dipped into it and then inflated. Another
type of mold is an object called the Clapper. The clapper is
a tool consisting of two rectangular pieces of wood joined at
one end by a leather hinge. There is an aperture in one of the
pieces of wood, and this holds the stem of a goblet or wineglass
while it is being made. The clapper is used to squeeze a blob
of glass in order to form the foot. Any questions about these
molds?"
Siofra shakes her head, and smiles, sketching
down more notes.
Sapphire eyes sweep the room before Rand continues,"Another
item that can be used similar to the pontil is the Clamp. It
will close the still unfinished vessel. Usually used to make
the bottoms of some sort of vessel. Any questions before we go
into the larger objects in glass crafting?"
Siofra shakes her head.
Rand continues,"The final two things
I will mention are the chimeny and the furnace. The chimney is
a glass tube, open at both ends, used to shield the flame of
an oil lamp, to trap soot, and to increase the draft. The Furnace
is an enclosed structure for the production and application of
heat. In glassmaking, furnaces are used for melting the batch,
maintaining pots of glass in a molted state, and reheating partly
formed objects at the glory hole. " He takes a slighht breath,"Can
you see the difference between the two?"
Siofra nods quietly as she turns her page
on her notes, and then looks up at Rand again.
