Craftworks
Recently
rebuilt, this craftworks has an almost new appearance to it.
New work benches are arranged against the walls, a few new pieces
of work lay out on them. The center of the room is dominated
by two forges, almost any size piece of metal could be worked
from the heat of these over-sized forges. A small forge resides
in a corner, apparently for more delicate operations. It
is apparent from the new mortar that all the forges have been
rebuilt from the floor up. Near each forge are bins for
coal and odd pieces of metal. Above the center forges large
vent hoods draw great volumes of air out of the craftworks.
Over and around the Office door are hooks for displaying samples
of Smithcraft work, along with objects that may be for sale.
Sorted piles of reclaimed scrap metal lay against the back wall.
On
the perch is TeeSquare.
You
see Forge, Glass Furnace, Gemcrafter Scroll, Flamethrower Class,
and Debbie's Bed here.
Dralin
is here.
Obvious
exits:
Smith
Office Reception Hallway
Dralin
says, "hello"
Dralin
says, "I'm Dralin"
Dralin
extends a hand to Moiraine.
Moiraine
smiles shaking the hand, "I'm Moria, Miner Sr. Journeywoman."
Dralin
twiddles his thumbs waiting for the others.
[Smith]
Moiraine wavers, "Last call for Gemcraft lesson."
Nathan
skips in hyperly up from the Reception Hall.
Moiraine
smiles nodding to the new comer, "I'm Moria," she looks
down at her notes, "I'll be teaching a gemcrafting class."
Moiraine
nods, "Okay, the first part will be about the Gemstone.
Gemstones are the minerals that have outstanding transperency,
luster, color, "fire", and freedom from flaws, and
are therefore prized for their beauty."
Nathan
finds a seat and gives full attention to Moria.
Moiraine
looks back down at her notes, "Now onto the Preparation
of a Gemstone, A gemstone becomes a gem when it is cut, shaped
and polished for use as an ornament."
Moiraine
looks to see if there are any questions.
Moiraine
says, "The fnal form, depending on the type of stone and
the preference of the gemcrafter, will be a facedted stone, a
cabochon," she looks back at her notes, "or a carving."
Nathan
raises a hand.
Moiraine
nods, "Yes?"
Nathan
smiles a little "What kind are the most commonly found?"
Dralin
rsaises his hand too
Dralin
says, "oh oh me me me!"
Dralin
sits back down waiting for Nathan's question to be answered
Moiraine
looks to the boy, "What do you mean?"
Nathan
giggles "Which gem sot(stones) are found the most.
Moiraine
smiles, "Well at Blacksands we have many black diamonds."
Dralin
says, "and redsands got red diamonds right?"
Moiraine
giggles, "No, Redsands has Red sand, glasscrafters like
it I hear."
OOC:
Nathan says "brb"
Dralin
thinks "now ye made me forget'
Moiraine
nods, "Could it be what is a cabochon?"
Dralin
says, "no, but answer that anyways"
Moiraine
nods, "A cabochon is a highly polished, convex-cut, unfaceted
gem, we will go into that more."
Moiraine
smiles, going on, "Faceted stones are cut so as to bring
out the brilliance and sparkle of the gem. The cabochon cut-highly
polished, bur rounded or flattened rather then faceted-take advantage
of the stones' color and pattern."
Dralin
says, "and how do you cut them?"
Moiraine
smiles, "Well," she opens her rucksack and pulls out
some tools, "I use these."
Dralin
looks at the tools closely
Moiraine
says, "Caving is a popular way of working suitable gemstones
in larger sizes. including among others rock crystal(quartz),
agate, turquoise and jade." she pulls out a small ring,
"I have been working on this, is shows carving."
[Smith]
Chiarra is smithing again!
[Smith]
Moiraine waver for them to join the Gemcraft calls
[Smith]
Moiraine: class even
[Smith]
Chiarra: where??
[Smith]
Chiarra: Now is one?
[Smith]
Moiraine: Yes, in the craftworks.
Chiarra
walks up from the Reception Hall.
Chiarra
dashes into the Craftworks, a mischievious smirk on her face
as she knows she'll arrive late, yet again.
Aligore
walks up from the Reception Hall.
Moiraine
smiles, "Hello all." OOC: If you want I'll @send you
the first part of the lesson.
OOC:
Chiarra nods and would appreciate that. :)
Moiraine
says, "Diamonds have many different cuts and should be left
up to a master Gemcrafter, but if you feel you are to it.
Diamonds have 58 cut facets there are normally different people
who have expert knowledge in the different ways to cut diamonds.Just
the shaping alone would take you turns (years to learn), some
shapes are: Brilliant cut-58 facets facets are the side cuts,
the cuts that make it sparkle and shine), and round cut. Any
style of diamond cutting other than the round or brilliant, or
single cuts is called a fancy cut. Important fancy cuts include,
marquise, emerald, baguette, heart shape, pear shape, kite, and
triangle. Now other gemstones can be cut in rectangles, and numerous
other shapes, the best bet is to get a book and look up shapes
of gems."
Moiraine
smiles, "Now the rest of this can be found on the Gemcrafters
Scroll." she points to it, "We all have probably heard
of the Four C's: Color, Clarity, Cut, Carat. These are
used to get the value of a stone. The beauty of a stone
is determined by the same C's but in different order: Cut, Color,
Clarity, Carat."
Moiraine
says, "Color is the body color of the stone. Clarity is
the degree of flawlessness. Cut also includes the proportion
of the stone. Carat is what the weight of the stone is."
Moiraine
says, "When examining a stone for value or beauty, one must
keep in mind its faults. To do so, the stone must be examined
under excellent light from many angles. Some of the common
faults found in stones are as follows:"
Moiraine
waits to see if she is going to fast.
Dralin
says, "not at all"
Chiarra
sits patiently, taking in all the information.
Moiraine
says, "1) Chipped culet (stone bottom point), 2) Fringed
girdle. Small radial cracks penetrating the stone from the girdle.
3) Bearded girdle. Similar, but can be repaired by
repolishing, without much loss in stone weight 4) Girdle too
thick. Too much weight will in girdle, so, for its weight, it
will be smaller in diameter than another stone of comparable
weight."
Moiraine
says, "Common cut process: Put pointed end of the diamond
(let's say) against a turning wheel that held another diamond,
then grind off the point of the diamond, creating a large, flat
surface. This flat-top looks like squarish shape and is
called a table top.'"
Moiraine
says, "Rose-cut: Its
base is flat and its facets, which are in multiples of six, give
it a flower-like appearance like an opening rosebud.' "
Moiraine
says, "Cushion Cut: Oval with squarish corners. Crown
is higher than the table facet and much smaller in diameter.
Culet was open' instead of a point."
Moiraine
says, "Holder cut: Higher crown, small
table-facet, and an open culet. Round in shape, crown not
as high nor table as small. "
Moiraine
says, "Common settings: Bezel: Rim holds the stone and completely
surrounds gem. Bezels have straight edges, scalloped edges,
or can be molded into any shape to accommodate the stone.
The backs can be open or closed. Can make stone look larger
or can even conceal nicks or chips."
Moiraine
says, "Collet: Like bezel, but uses gold tubing (very rare
and done by highly skilled masters)"
Moiraine
says, "Prong: 4 or 6. Can be pointed, rounded,
flat or V shaped. Gypsy: Metal at top of ring (around stone)is
much heavier than shank. The stone is set flush into hole
at top. Flat-top: Faceted stone is placed into a hole in the
flat top of the metal and then held in place by small chips of
metal attached to stone's girdle. Sometimes metal chips
areworked in beads. Channel: Into channel with no metal
separating them. Bar: Like channel. Circular band.
Stones held by long thin bar instead of prongs shared between
two stones. Pave: Numerous small stones. Like paved with
stones. Cluster: One large stone and several small accent stones."
Moiraine
smiles, "That is about it."

Chiarra
sits back in her seat, eyes flared as she is overwhelmed with

away when I said it :)"
