Ista Hold Main Courtyard

Built into the side of a hard granite cliff, Ista Hold looms dominantly to the west.  Windows pock the smooth surface of the cliff in neat rows until they get closer to the ground, where they begin to frame the great bronze doors leading into the Hold itself.  A sea breeze seems constantly in the air here as the ocean and the wharf lay but dragonlengths to the east.   Beaches are scattered to the north, recreational areas for the Hold's residents when not working.  

It is a summer noon. 

Perched on a windowsill are Fina and Clouds' March.

Kenoryn walks in.

Kenoryn walks lightly up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

You open Flamer Rack.

Melissa blinks curiously, walking towards Paric "Lesson ?" she inquires almost dumbfound...

Paric smiles as he inspects several of the flamers in the cabinet.  He glances over his shoulder and notices the young apprentice standing there.  "Ah...you are here.  Great!  Your ready for your lesson?"

Melissa blinks and stammers "l..l.l.l..lesson ? Oh yea !" she beams moving towards him..

Paric chuckles, "Good...then why don't we get started then.  As you already know, you are here to learn about the safe operation of flamethrowers."  He walks over to the flamer rack and remove one of the large bulky objects from the cabinet and sets it down beside him.  "This, " he says indicating the object he has just removed from the rack, "is a flamethrower!"

Orianna walks in.

Melissa oooohs and nods

Orianna glances around quickly and runs towards the doors muttering, "Late! Latelatelatelate! Argh!"

Orianna ambles up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

Karvonen walks in.

You notice Karvonen looking at you.

"It consists of several major part: a pari of tanks, a guage, flexible tubing and a wand," explains Paric as he points to each in turn.  "Now, just knowing that this is a flamer isn't enough knowledge to operate a flamer properly.  So what you'll learn today is how to operate a flamer in a safe manner."

Karvonen walks towards the beach.

Paric glances over at Melissa periodically to make sure that she is paying attention.  "Okay, one of the first things that you should do before operating a flamer is to inspect it for any damage."  He lifts the flamer up and slowly begins to inspect it.  "You want to make sure there are no dents, scratches, or cracks which may affect the safe performance of the flamer.  Take a good look at the tanks and other parts.  If you notice anything wrong with the flamer...don't use it!"

Melissa nods listening, but glances towards the passing people, and to Peri a bit now and then

Paric smiles, "It is very important to report any damage of a flamer to one of hte master smiths.  If you operate a damaged flamer, you risk the chance of the tanks exploding which could result in injury to yourself and others."

You remove Craft Flamethrower1 from Flamer Rack.

Melissa ews and noddles...

Paric remove a small key from the pouch hanging from his waistbelt then inserts it into the locking mechanism on the side of the flamer wand.  "Each flamer also has a safety mechnism that can be switched on to prevent an accidental discharge.  Anyone can engage the safety, however, only someone with a key can disengage it.  The lord holder and master smiths each carry a key."  He scratches his chin and continues, "On a side note, if you ever notice that a flamer is not in use and not 'safed', safe it!"  He looks down at the safety and turns the key with a quick flick before removing the key and placing it back into his belt pouch.  "Okay...this will the flamer you'll use today.  Please check it over for any damage to ensure that it is in proper shape to operate." he tells the young apprentice as he hands her the large bulky flamer.

You hand Craft Flamethrower1 to Melissa.

Melissa blinks and checks

Melissa examines a dial on her Craft Flamethrower1.

Melissa says, "The Craft Flamethrower1 is at 0% of its capacity. The accidental flaming lock is *not* engaged."

Melissa reports solemly...

Paric watches as Melissa examine her flamer.  "Take a look at the tubing...is it cracked?  How about the tanks?  If you miss even the smallest problem, you could end up with a disaster."

Melissa nods, looking over it, "the tubing looks cracked, brittle " she murmers, fingering a small hole near the base of the tubing"

Paric smiles and nods.  "Okay...then go and get another flamer from the flamer rack."

Melissa goes to switch, looking over them all before taking one for final inspection..

Paric moves over to the flamer rack and removes one of the flamers from the rack taking care to carefully inspect it.  "Okay...lets walk over to the charging unit and learn about it."

You remove Craft Flamethrower2 from Flamer Rack.

Melissa removes Craft Flamethrower1 from her back and carefully sets it down.

Melissa lifts Craft Flamethrower1 and straps it on her back.

Melissa nods,,,and waits for Paric..

Paric smiles, "Okay...the chemical that we use in the flamers is called Ageenothree.  When properly used with the flamer, it accomplishes a couple of things.  One, it will flame and incinerate thread.  Two, it'll drown the escaping thread in the burrows that they create should they get past the dragons and their riders!"

Paric chuckles, "Now even with all that destructive power, Ageenothree has one very beneficial side effect.  Do you know what that is?" he asks of Melissa.

Melissa nods "Acts as a fertilizer " she beams

Zoey walks in.

Zoey glides towards the beach.

Paric chuckles and grins, "Very good!  Yes, it will act as a fertilizer when the ground is saturated with it.  So should you ever accidentally spill any on the ground, there isn't really anything to worry about.  Just step back away from the area and allow the Ageenothree to soak into the ground where it'll become harmless."

Melissa smiles and nods..

Paric's smile turns serious as he rubs the back of his neck.  "Okay.  With that in mind and realizing the damage that it can do to thread, it is important that you avoid spilling any Ageenothree on you.  Ageenothree is a very caustic substance very capable of burning you.  Should you accidentally ever spill any of it on your skin, eyes or any part of your body, immediately flush the area with large amounts of water until the burning sensation stops.  After that, report immediately to the healers to get it looked at."

Melissa nods..... and winces to the thought of ever doing that..

Zoey walks in.

Paric smiles, "Okay..with that said, let's charge these things up!"  He sets the flamer down next to the charging unit and attaches a hose to the tank leading from the charging unit.  "Now it is very important to follow my directions or you may end up spilling the ageenothree from the charging unit or flamer.  I don't want any accidents today! Understood?" he asks looking sternly at the young apprentice.

You remove Craft Flamethrower2 from your back and carefully set it down.

Kenoryn walks lightly down some steps which lead to the great doors and the Hold.

Melissa removes Craft Flamethrower1 from her back and carefully sets it down.

Kenoryn waves.

Genisis slips into the void, leaving behind a shower of green sparkles.

Paric awaits Melissa's answer.

Melissa nods, "I understand" she looks blankly.

Paric smiles and nods, "Good.  Okay, so the first thing we do is set the flamer down next to the charger like I have already done and hook the fuel hose to the tanks....like so." he says demonstrating the task. "While this unit will automatically shut the fueling down when the tanks are full, you should check the gauge to make sure that it doesn't get overcharged."

Paric chuckles. "Okay...here we go!" he grins as he flips a switch and the unit begins to fill the tanks.

Melissa activates the safety mechanism on her Craft Flamethrower1.

You hook your Craft Flamethrower2 up to the Flamer Chargin Unit.

Paric smiles, "Okay Melissa, take a look at the pressure gauge."

You lift Craft Flamethrower2 and strap it on your back.

Spectrum walks lightly down some steps which lead to the great doors and the Hold.

Spectrum walks lightly towards the beach.

SilverWing glides on gossamer wings towards the beach.

Melissa lifts Craft Flamethrower1 and straps it on her back.

Paric smiles, "You'll notice that it should be registering full."

Melissa examines a dial on her Craft Flamethrower1.

Melissa nods

Paric smiles, "Okay...when walking around with a unsafed and fully charged flamer, make sure that you only point the flaming wand at thread or their burrows.  Nothing else.  When moving from one area to another, the wand should be pointed at the ground.  In other words, do not..." he says emphasizing those two words, "... point the wand at anything you don't want to incinerate!  Is this understood?"

Zoey returns from writing herself a note.

Melissa nods

OOC: Melissa says "wants to say// " Sir yes Sir.   *lol*"

OOC: Melissa says "army... <snicker>"

OOC: Zoey grins, "Go ahead, can't hurt to kiss up!"

OOC: Zoey says "*smooch*"

"Again, flamers are to be used only on thread and thread burrows.  Now take a step away from anyone that may be nearby to reduce the likelihood that they may get injured from the heat and flame.  Locate your target and depress the trigger.  Very simple!" grins Paric.  "Alright! I'll go first and make sure that you pay attention to what I do.  It'll be your turn next."

Zoey hurriedly jumps behind Paric.

Melissa nods

Paric smiles and take a couple of steps toward the target he had placed out earlier.  Looking about about to make sure that the area is safe, he takes aim and slowly depresses the trigger...

Paric depresses the trigger on his Craft Flamethrower2. Instantly, a *huge* flame erupts from the end of the wand.

Flamer Target instantly desintegrates, turning into a whisp of ozone, and carbon monoxide.

There is an audible 'clack' from Paric's Craft Flamethrower2, and the flame disappears with the remains of the Flamer Target.  Paric looks around for another target.

You drop Flamer Target.

Melissa blinks

Paric turns around and walks back toward Melissa, the wand of the flamer pointing at the ground.  "Okay...your turn. "

OOC: Paric says "fire cf1 at target"

Melissa mimics Paric, steping away as she takes a doubtful at Paric..

Melissa depresses the trigger on her Craft Flamethrower1. Instantly, a *huge* flame erupts from the end of the wand.

Flamer Target instantly desintegrates, turning into a whisp of ozone, and carbon monoxide.

There is an audible 'clack' from Melissa's Craft Flamethrower1, and the flame disappears with the remains of the Flamer Target.  Melissa looks around for another target.

Rosuma walks in.

Zoey ooohs, as the targets disintegrate!

Melissa AHH  she whines... scared to death of this stupid thing... "Lesson oveR ?" she whimpers...

Paric chuckles and congratulates Melissa.  "Very good!  That wasn't that hard, was it?"

Rosuma wanders aimlessly in, a bit curious at the crowd...

Paric chuckles and shakes his head, "Not completely. Okay...lets get these things put away...in the proper...safe...way!"

Kenoryn shakes her head and couldn't imagine using those, for any reason.

Melissa blinks and gives a startled look to Paric, nodding...

Paric chuckles, "At the end of a long, hard day of battling thread, we can't just go off to the hall and get something to eat.  No, first we must empty the tanks back into the charging unit, engage the flamer's safey lock, and then secure them into the flamer rack."

Zoey steps away for a moment to scrawl out a message to someone.

Paric grins at Melissa, "So lets go and do that."  He walks back over to the charging unit and places his flamethrower down on the ground next to the unit.

Zoey returns, sending a firelizard off to deliver the message.

Paric smiles, "Okay...the procedure is essentially the reverse of how to charge the flamer.  Hook the fuel hose up to the tanks, then reverse the charging switch....like so." he says demonstrating the technique.

Zoey glides up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

You remove Craft Flamethrower2 from your back and carefully set it down.

Aein skips happily in from the beach.

Paric smiles. "Now engage the safety mechanism and place the flamer into the flamer rack."  He engages the safety while watching Melissa perform the procedure of draining the flamethrower.

Dwra wonders up the dusty road loudly, glaring in everyone's direction. Seeing that a lesson was about to take place, she hunches upon the pebbled steps---- watching the apprentices with evil eyes. Stupid things, they can be, so convinced that they're the best until they're broken down to absolute, whining, pathetic... she smiles slightly to the side of her mouth in pretense of happiness.

Aein watches her friend leave, sitting down on the ground and watching everything intently

Melissa lifts Craft Flamethrower1 and straps it on her back.

Dwra's dark eyes flicker over the fragile girl's body sitting on the lowly, dirty ground. " Dear, you really shouldn't be doing that, you'll ruin your garmet..." she growls sweetly, raising her brow. " Really." What are parents teaching their children these days; how to be brats? It most certaintly seems like it, especially that one... the evil one. Shuddering, she stares in her lap for a moment, remembering...

Melissa puts Craft Flamethrower1 in Flamer Rack.

Paric smiles at Melissa.  "Very good!  So...do you have any questions?"

Melissa shakes her head,. looking to the crowd

Paric chuckles, "Okay...you did a very good job today.  It'll be a pleasure having you on one of the ground crews during the next fall.  Okay...why don't you head off to your next class...or what ever you are scheduled for..."

Rosuma continues to quietly watch the lesson, though at Dwra's tone her eyes slip towards the young woman.

Aein peers at Dwra curiously, the face sparking a memory.. "No I won't.." Bright orange hands fiddle with the little stick 'tail' latched firmly into her skin. "Felines don't even wear clothing, did you know that?" Although, when she gets to be a feline.. She's gonna wear clothes.. Yup yup

Melissa nods. "Alright, "thanks :>

Melissa hugs Paric! Paric is hugged!

You close Flamer Rack.

Paric chuckles and looks up at the crowd that had gathered during the lesson.  "Hmmm..." he begins before turning to head back into the hall.

Dwra notices Rosuma; and bobs her head politely, you must do that when you meet people, it's simply unproper if you don't. Which is stupid, but it still is unproper. Then she smiles down at Aein, coldness still reflected in her eyes- and it's quite obvious by now that the smile is fake. " Well, maybe that's because they don't prefer to wear clothes?" she wonders impishly, moving sideways so that Paric can reach past her up to the hold and hall.

Melissa goes home.
