Smithcraft Flamethrower Lesson

Instructor: Craftsecond Paric

October 6, 1998

Paric smiles and nods upon the appearance of Darman.  "Ah your here!  Are you ready for your lesson?"

Darman says, "Yes"

Paric grins and exclaims, "Great!"  He quickly walks over to the flamer cabinet and pulls out a flamer and sets it on the ground in front of him.

Ista Hold Main Courtyard

Built into the side of a hard granite cliff, Ista Hold looms dominantly to the west.  Windows pock the smooth surface of the cliff in neat rows until they get closer to the ground, where they begin to frame the great bronze doors leading into the Hold itself.  A sea breeze seems constantly in the air here as the ocean and the wharf lay but dragonlengths to the east.   Beaches are scattered to the north, recreational areas for the Hold's residents when not working.

It is a spring late night.

Perched on a windowsill are RedRobin and Cayenne.

You see Ista_Map (look #555), Red Fruit tree, Orange Fruit Tree, Flamer Chargin Unit, Fruit and Vegetable Stand, Anona tree, Istan Wagon, and mint bush here.

Darman is here.

Obvious exits:

Ista Hold Dock     Main Beach     Great Doors     Stables     Guards

Leniem walks in.

Darman looks over the thrower

Leniem nods brefily as he passes through.

Leniem skalawags on up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

"Okay...this is a flamer." says Paric indicating a large object with two tanks on it sitting on the ground next to him.  "There are many parts to it that need constant maintenance.  One of the things that I'd like you to do is make sure that you always inspect the flamer before you use it for any damage.  There is no reason to get injured because of carelessness."

Darman nods

Darman says, "Do you just look at the lines, nozzle, and tanks or do you actually shoot it, or do you do a combination of the three?"

Hoof trots in from the beach.

Paric smiles and picks up the flamer sitting next to him. "Well, actually you'll want to check the entire unit for any dents, cracks, or scratches.  If the tubing is worn, brittle, or cracking, don't use it!  Find one of the Smithcraft Masters to have it repaired! "

Hoof prances in riderless and slows down as he approches

Hoof finds a small bucket of morsels and starts to munch away.

Darman nods

Darman says, "Are there any common areas where cracks and defects occur most regularly?"

Paric smiles and shakes his head, "Not really.  The tubing wears out more quickly than any of the metal components, usually becoming brittle or cracking from age.  However, that doesn't mean that someone, through mishandling of the flamer, can't dent it or puncture it.  "

Paric points to several parts on the flamer. "Okay, as you can see, the flamer is composed of two tanks, a guage, tubing and the wand.  You'll also notice that each as a safety which can be engaged to prevent accidental firing.  In fact, it really is important to engage the safety at anytime the flamer is not in use.  The holders and smith masters have keys to all the flamers to disengage the safety mechanism.  However, while you may need a key to unlock the safety, anyone can engage the mechanism."

Hoof trots towards the beach.

Paric picks up the flamer and hands it over to Darman.  "Okay...you will get to use this flamer.  The first thing you should do is check for any damage as I've indicated."

Darman takes the flamer and checks it over

Paric walks over to the flamer rack and removes another flamer from the cabinet.  He sets it down in front of him and looks it over for any damage examining the tubing, wand, and cyclinders.  He then pulls out a key and inserts it in to the locking mechinism and turns it with an audible click.  He does the same thing with the flamer that Darman has.  "Okay...now that we've got the safety disengaged, why don't we talk a little about what we will be using to fuel the flamer...that is, Ageenothree."

Darman says, "But sir, what about this little bit of fraying in the tubing right here?"

Darman points to a small bit of fraying in a bend of the tubing

Paric smiles and nods, "Good catch.  Why don't you engage the safety again...and then place that flamer over next to the rack and get a new one.  Any damage to the flamer means that there is a possibility of leaking of the Ageenothree or worse, an explosion."

Darman takes the flamer over to the cabinet and reengages the safety.  He puts it down and picks up a new one

Paric smiles, "Okay...how is that one?"

Darman says, "A little dusty, but in good condition"

Paric chuckles, "Okay...then why don't we continue."  He walks over and disengages the safety on Darman's flamer.  "Now, as I said before, we use a chemical called Ageenothree to fuel the flamer.  It basically does two things.  One, to flame and incinerate thread.  The other is to drown the escaping thread in the burrow that they create should they ever get past the dragonriders."  He chuckles.  "There is a nice little side effect to ageenothree in that it'll act as a fertilizer."

Darman nods

Darman says, "Always good to keep the farmers happy"

Paric laughs, "Yea...very true....heheh."

Paric smiles, "Okay...While ageenothree can ignite into flames, keep in mind that it is also a very caustic substance that burns when it contacts you skin.  So it is very important that you follow my instructions very carefully."  He shakes his head, "I don't want to have to deal with any burns today or ever.  However, if you do end up getting any of the agenothree on you, rinse it off in large quantities of water until the pain subsides, then report to a healer.  Is this understood?"

Darman says, "Yes, sir"

Paric smiles, "If you spill any of the agenothree.  Move away from it and alert others to the danger.  As I stated earlier, eventually it will soak into the ground where it will act as a fertilizer and thereby become harmless to you and those around you."Charysli moves with slow strides, attempting to mask her limp in from the beach.

Darman nods

Torey runs down some steps which lead to the great doors and the Hold.

Paric smiles, "Alright.  I will demonstrate how to charge a flamer.  After which, you will get the chance to do the same thing. "

Torey skips on through, though skids to a stop and quirks an eyebrow. Flamers?

"Okay, first you want to set your flamer down next to the charging unit." Paric begins as he begins to hook a hose from the charging unit to the cylinders.  He looks at the pressure gauge on the flamer to verify how full -- or in this case, not full -- and then turns on the charging unit.  The unit begins to fill the flamer cylinders with ageenothree."

OOC: Paric smiles, "Normally you would type 'charge flamer from cfu'

Charysli is interested as well...

Darman nods

Torey runs towards the beach.

Leniem skalawags on down some steps which lead to the great doors and the Hold.

Leniem skalawags on towards the beach.

Paric looks back down at the gauge and watches as it changes from empty to full.  "You want to watch the pressure guage on the unit to make sure that the charging unit doesn't overfill the flamer.  Normally, however, the flamer charging unit will usually shut itself off before that."  The flamer charging unit shuts down automatically and Paric then uncouples the charging hose from the flamer.  "Okay...now is your turn!" he says turning to Darman.

Darman repeats the process

Mishanda grins and hikes down some steps which lead to the great doors and the Hold.

Mishanda weaves through the courtyard, smiling on her way to the beach.

Mishanda grins and hikes towards the beach.

Paric chuckles, "Okay...with that done, let's move over to the target area."  He picks up the flamer and straps it onto his back as he moves toward the targets.  "Now anytime you are walking about with a flamer, make sure that you point the wand down to the ground.  Never point or aim the wand at any thing  you don't want to incinerate.  Is this understood?"

Charysli chuckles.

Darman says, "Yes."

Darman picks up his flamer and follows Paric

Mishanda grins and hikes in from the beach.

Mishanda grins and hikes up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

Brooklynn twirls gracefully in from the beach.

Paric smiles at Darman, "These are to only be used on thread and thread burrows."  He looks about to make sure that no one is near and takes a step away from Darman toward the target.  "Okay ... making sure that no one is in your way, locate your target and take aim.  When you are ready, slowly depress the trigger like so ... " he says demonstrating the technique upon which a huge flame erupts from the end of the wand immediately disentigrating the target.

There is an audible 'clack' from Paric's Flamethrower, and the flame disappears with the remains of the Flamer Target.   Paric walks back over to Darman with the flamer wand pointed at the ground.  "Your turn!"

Brooklynn twirls gracefully up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

Charysli moves with slow strides, attempting to mask her limp towards the beach.

Lythande walks in.

Darman walks up to Paric's relative position, clears his field of fire and takes aim

Lythande trips tailessly towards the beach.

Darman says, "Alright, here goes"

Darman depresses the switch and the flamer jumps a little bit, flame belching out of the nozzle towards the target.  He misses at first but generally incinerates the target

Darman lets go of the trigger and the same "clack" that Paric's flamer made comes from his flamer

Paric shakes his head and smiles, "Well...not bad for a first time.  With a little practice, you'll get better at it.  Why don't you try again with that other target."

Darman nods and aims

Darman takes a deep breath then depresses the trigger.  This time his aim is truer and the target incinerates almost instantly.  He releases the mechanism making a clack noise

Paric nods, "Much better!  Good job!  Now at the end of a hard day of destroying thread, we still will need to drain and safety the flamers before putting them away.  So lets head back over to the charging unit and I'll demonstrate how to do that."

Darman points his nozzle to the ground, resafeties it for the time being and walks back to the charging unit with paric

Flarra walks in from the beach.

Felis scampers in from the beach.

Aleesa walks in from the beach.

Flarra walks up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

Felis scampers up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

Aleesa walks up a few small steps and passes into the Hold through the great doors.

Paric walks back over to the flamer charging unit and sets his flamer down next to it.  He again couples the fueling hose to the the flamer. "Okay...to drain the agenothree from the flamer, you need to hook it up to the charging unit and reverse the process that you used to fill it."  He double checks his connection, then flips the charging units switch to drain the flamer.  He takes a look at the pressure gauge to make sure that it is working properly noticing that the gauge is quickly moving from full to empty.

After a short while the charging unit shuts off and Paric disconnects the fueling hose from the flamer and engages the safety mechanism.  Turning to Darman, "Okay...your turn."

Darman steps up the the charging unit and connects the flamer to the unit, checking for security.  Switches the unit to "drain" and watches his pressure meter, then disconnecting when it reads empty and the unit shuts off

Paric nods, "Very good.... don't forget to engage the safety. " he tells Darman.

Darman engages the safety

"Then the last thing you need to do is to replace the flamer back into the flamer rack." says Paric as he walks over to the flamer rack and placed the flamer back into its slot.  "You did a good job tonight.  Do you have any questions before we call it a night?"

Darman replaces his flamer in the rack

Darman says, "If I notice premature threadfall and no masters are available, what do I do?"

Darman says, "and thank you, Master Paric"

Paric chuckles, "Well...I would hope that at least one of the holders will be about then.  Usually the weyrs and Starcraft will notify us before hand."

Darman nods

Darman says, "Thank you"

Paric nods, "You are welcome.  I'll see you later!"

Darman says, "Night"

Darman goes home.
